Yep. There is no metric they use to determine how popular or unpopular an opinion is. It's completely up to their own discretion, which means that it's completely up to their own biases to decide what stays and what goes. Surprise, any post bringing light to men's issues get removed.
Some people will argue that if most people in the comments agree, that shows that it's popular. But I think that's wrong. It doesn't take into account context of where the opinion is being seen. It's entirely possible (and sometimes likely) for an opinion to be mostly agreed with on /r/unpopularopinion, yet be extremely unpopular in most of society.
For another example, consider how sometimes a thread will be nearly unanimous on some issue, with anyone taking Stance A being upvoted massively, and anyone taking Stance B being downvoted massively. Sometimes, if you scroll very far down in the thread, you will find a comment chain where people are taking Stance B and being upvoted, while all agreeing with each other. Why does this happen? Because people who haven't found anyone who agrees with them yet are more likely to keep digging. People who take Stance A enter the thread, see the top 10 comment chains all agreeing with them, they upvote those, maybe leave a reply or two, and then leave the thread satisfied. But people who take Stance B enter the thread, see all the people agreeing on Stance A, so they keep scrolling. They are more motivated to dig deeper in the thread to find someone, anyone who agrees with them. So as a result, when you find that comment chain way down in the thread, it's likely that most or all of the people who viewed that chain are people who take Stance B.
In that previous example, would it be correct to say that Stance B is the popular opinion? Absolutely not. Yet there exists a comment chain where Stance B is upvoted more than downvoted, with more agreeing replies than disagreeing replies.
The same logic applies to /r/unpopularopinion. Even if Stance A is almost unanimous in society and Stance B is very unpopular, it's possible to have a thread on /r/unpopularopinion expressing Stance B and being mostly agreed with. And that's because people might be more likely to dig around on that particular subreddit, hoping to find someone, anyone who agrees with them. People who take Stance A are less likely to dig around on that subreddit, because they already see their own opinion echoed back at them by all of society.
tl;dr: Even if a thread on /r/unpopularopinion seems like the biggest circlejerk ever, that doesn't mean the opinion is actually popular. It was just popular with the subset of people who viewed the thread.

Even if what you say is true, and it is widely popular on reddit, that still doesn't disprove what I said. Something can be popular on reddit without being popular in society as a whole.
