So there is a dangerous (and possibly misandrist) myth that men don't die OF prostate cancer, they die WITH it

This is a conception. The 99% survival rate comes from the very high prevalence of benign cases, that "water down" the perceived mortality rate. Starting at at 60, prostate cancer is one of the most deadly cancers for men in terms of total number of deaths.

Think of it this way:

10% of 100 is 10.

5% of 1000 is 50

Even then 10% is "more" than 5%, you can that 50 is more than 10. This is how prostate cancer survival v actual deaths works.

My neighbor got cancer a few years ago and later died. If I'm not mistaken, it was prostate cancer. He was a super active guy, biking all the time. Within a year, he couldn't bike anymore.

Prostate cancer and breast cancer (m/w) are basically tied for first most common and deadly cancer, lung is 3rd. Of these 3, only one affects just one gender, prostate of course. But when you remember only half of people have a prostate, increasing the rate, prostate cancer is about 50% more common than any other cancer

Here is where is gets REALLY bad... for men and men only.

Breast cancer is by far and away the most funded at 102 grants and a little over 100M in funding. Lung is HALF of that with 74 grants at 50M. Prostate is at 53 grants totaling 53M.

So a cancer that does in fact primarily effect women, yet some men, get more funding than the cancer tied at 1 and the number 3 cancer COMBINED. So yes, we fucking haaaaate women in the US, so much so we fund a cancer that mainly effects them to a degree that's so stark it almost encompasses the totals of every other funded cancer combined. Yet prostate cancer is neck in neck in terms of cases and death rate... tell me again how we favor men so much when there is a male specific cancer that is funded at 10% of a cancer of essentially equal cases and deaths?

This issue is the aggressiveness. Vast majority of time, prostate cancer is slow-growing. It will take 10+ years on average for the tumor to spread beyond the prostate to a deadly stage. This is why the 5-year survival rate is extremely high with prostate cancer. A man that keeps up with his screenings will very likely discover the cancer in an early stage. At that point a decision needs to be made...either treatment, remove the prostate, or watch it. Sometimes the wrong decision is made. Sometimes he's told its not aggressive and doesn't keep up with watching it and lets it go. It's a double edged sword. Time gives you the chance to do different things and map out a strategy. However, time also gives a false sense of security that its not serious.

Also, some doctors are not very good. They may miss tumors or dismiss things they shouldnt be. So always be willing to seek other opinions.

Now if a man doesn't do any screenings, by the time symptoms show up, it's usually pretty advanced. The man himself shares some blame in that situation. You can't catch ANY cancer early if you refuse to look for it. Cancer will usually not show symptoms until it's bad.

Breast cancer in comparison tends to be far more aggressive. It tends to spread much more quickly. In fact, certain types will have already spread by the time its found.
