Despite all this uncertainty, most researchers urge victims to seek protective orders because studies consistently show they make women feel safer. In one study, 86 percent of participants believed that the restraining order helped. Most women are satisfied with the order even if the attacker violates it. Although subjective, that result is an important endpoint. Women who believe the protective order is working report better sleep and fewer days of stress.

I wonder how many times restraining orders appear to work because they were never needed in the first place. Situations like the cases of malicious prosecution I've seen friends go through (one of which ended up leading me to /r/mensrights, in a way) aren't going to be accounted for in a study on domestic abuse victims. Domestic abuse advocates don't believe in false allegations, or unmerited restraining orders, and would not measure that factor.

It would be more interesting to see a study showing how many restraining orders are given to women on just their word, with no documented predicating incident... how often violation convictions also occur just on the alleged victim's word, with no physical evidence of the alleged violation, and how often violation convictions occur for nonviolent actions and actions which may not be deliberate (like not getting out of a public area fast enough upon discovering the holder of the order is there.) I wonder, if these things are measured against the question of why restraining orders don't work, if we might find that the majority of merited orders don't work - that when someone is genuinely violent and threatening, a court order will not change that.

Pound of restraining orders means dick compared to a gun honestly. Admittedly I do think the restraining orders do have a affect but why go halfway? Lots of nutjobs out in the world of both sexes be prepared to deal with it unfortunately.

I hate these kinds of articles. Basically there's going to be a protest by a few hundred feminists and the law is going to be changed in favour of more draconian measures because one crazy guy shot his wife
