It's still true in many places. We just don't hear about it, not as a gendered problem anyway. Or, actually, we do hear about it - as a problem girls of "children" face. Nevermind it's boys who suffer the most.

My late FIL went into the coal mines in Cape Breton when he was 13.

Those were the days before mechanized mining. If your partner was sick, they would hang a red tag next to their mining helmet so everyone knew they weren't there, and you were sent down alone.

The rule was that if you didn't load everything you shot down from the coal face, you weren't paid for the day. This was hand loading by shovel.

You lived in a Company house, and bought everything from the Company store.
