In London, you will see that the vast majority of the homeless are white and male. Just walk around the city if you're ever there and see for yourself. I would stop and talk to them and they'd all say the same thing- the council, which assigns housing, tells them that because they are single white males, they are not considered "vulnerable" or "priority need. It's a purely disingenuous system, there's no reason not to give shelter to a homeless person who is white and male- there's no such thing as a homeless person who isn't vulnerable.

The institutional bias in the public housing sector is legion. If you are male and not with child you are on a hiding to nothing. If you are single and female you are auto-vulnerable and leaving you without assistance is classified as human rights abuse due to case law.

One major issue in the UK is how historically cases involving women and human rights attracted legal aid and access to courts, up to and including the full human rights court in Strasbourg. Across Europe case laws favouring women have been generated and there have been no balancing cases brought for men. Now that access to legal aid is literally impossible, and pro bono funding is biased o the gals, the status quo of men being second class citizens is established.

Yes, I saw something on TV the other year that showed a young, rough sleeping homeless man in London being repeatedly turned away from getting a council flat. Whereas a young woman living with her parents got an insta-flat because her parents were threatening to get her a profitable Right to Buy council flat kick her out. So rough sleeping homeless men are below perfectly housed women in terms of priorities.

Exactly how it is- do you remember exactly where that was from? What channel or program?

[–]-manatease 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sorry, I can't remember the name of it or the channel. It was definitely terrestrial TV though.

Guess what? Smackheads aren't 100% truthful. Or you aren't. Here's the government's view:

Waiting lists

Councils decide who gets offered housing based on a ‘points’ or ‘banding’ system.

Points and bands are based on housing need. For example, you’re likely to be offered housing first if you:

  • are homeless
  • live in cramped conditions
  • have a medical condition made worse by your current home

I'm well aware of what the written policy is. The actual practice rarely follows the outline as is written. The fact that the homeless population is vastly disproportionately one race/gender combination suggests something else is happening.

This true or not: "the council, which assigns housing, tells them that because they are single white males, they are not considered "vulnerable" or "priority need."

Edit: because if it is, it should be easy to gather evidence and take these Tory cunts down.

Why aren't homeless charities doing more to address the fact that the majority of homeless people are men

Because helping men is out of fashion.

Has it ever been in fashion?

Saw a feminist comment a few days ago, something to the effect that homeless men embody the worst kind of masculinity. Of course, some idiot says something idiotic, and if it's a feminist who says it, some MRA guy is going to say ALL feminists think that. Probably not.

But, feminists, who sometimes claim to speak for men, don't really have much to say about the worst expectations that masculinity places on men. And, they really don't seem to think there's much good about men in the first place.

So, another problem that mostly men face - not much interest.

Hah yeah ive read that. I remember when i was living in a homeless encampent some one made a sign basically saying this homeless encampment is full of white male privilege. It's like WTF

[–]cardinal2007 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ironic? As if to say that privilege doesn't give you shit if you're on the street?

[–]SludgeFactory20 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Generally speaking. If a woman is mildly attractive she will never be homeless because a man would take her in. If there's a homeless man that's mildly attractive there's no woman that would take him in.

It's has a lot to do with gender roles.

[–]cardinal2007 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't know if homelessness groups try to highlight other homeless people to raise more money, or because they don't care about the homeless men.

I think the campaigns to try to get more support for same-sex marriage used lesbian couples because that is more likely to be positively received. I couldn't blame them much if they used societies bias to market their charity.
