I’m involved in a discussion elsewhere where others are arguing it should be ok to have lowered standards for women to increase the number of them in a particular profession.

Some questions come to mind that I thought I’d throw up here:

  • Are there examples you can think of where standards or entry requirements have been lowered for male entrants to a workplace or profession? All I can think of are situations where standards have been lowered for women.

  • Can you think of particular workplaces or professions where this [lowering standards or entry requirements] could or should arguably be used to help increase the number of men but currently are not? What standards or entry requirements could be lowered?

  • Can you think of situations where standards or entry requirements have been lowered for women which you think have caused problems or could cause problems for employers, customers or others who are supposed to benefit from the employee’s output?
