I just got my first child support payment from my ex, currently 6k behind.

Shameless plug for r/fathersforcustody

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points43 points 7 years ago (27 children) | Copy Link

Deeper stuff aside, I'm pretty sure the top picture is a private dorm at Texas A&M, not public housing.

[–]DJ-Roukan 56 points57 points58 points 7 years ago (20 children) | Copy Link

In my state, they gain section 8 housing, which means any renter that qualified a property. Usually single family houses. We had one in our neighborhood at one time.

I was a veteran, working 12 hour days to afford, working the loading docks to pay the rest of my education.

she's across the street living free, free education, free transportation, cash, food stamps...because she decided to have two kids, by two different men.

[–][deleted] 47 points48 points49 points 7 years ago* (15 children) | Copy Link

See, that's the stuff that pisses me off. A single father in that situation would be seen as a deadbeat and shunned, instead she's a victim who gets to live off of other people's work with no stigma.

If I get one more playthrough at the game of life, I'm coming back as a white woman. Get everything handed to me, preferential admission and hiring, no cultural expectation to work OR do housework/childcare. Then I could just complain constantly about the two things that aren't tilted in my favor yet while people call me brave and a warrior.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Tbf, you need to come back as an attractive white woman. Otherwise you’r have it pretty much just as bad as men.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points18 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That is completely false. Have you seen the whales that military guys marry?

[–]Deofate 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Attractive is always better, but definitely not a prerequisite.

[–]RampagingAardvark 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I disagree that they have no cultural push to work or be mothers. Where I live, in central Canada, women are expected to work at least until they find a husband that can support them, then they are expected to have kids, then they are expected to either keep working, or be a stay at home Mom.

They aren't pressured to be the breadwinner of the relationship, but it's socially expected for them to pay their way if they don't have a husband. And all the parents I can think of are pressuring their daughter to give them grandkids, and then look after the parents when they're retired.

[–]Heffree 4 points5 points6 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Parents pressure sons for grandkids too, that part isn't as specific to women.

There are a plethora of services for single mothers all across Canada...Just about the same as in the US.

Lets keep our information accurate people.

Socialism in a nutshell.

[–]787787787 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

"Socialism." Y'know, dictionaries are free online, now.

[–]Planner_Hammish 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I think you're trying to make a point... what is it????

You're not one of those "no true socialists" are you? ugh.

[–]787787787 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

No, just that there's nothing in the definition of socialism that describes what he's complaining about.

People seem to think any social program amounts to a little slice of socialism. In fact, the best social programs are strategic investments in support of a better functioning capitalist economy.

[–]DJ-Roukan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Redistribution of wealth.

[–]787787787 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Wordcount = 3. What else?

[–]DJ-Roukan 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

You challenged, I answered. Want more words?

Explain to me how the welfare system for single mothers is a strategic investment in support of functioning capitalism, when there is no "investment" just a cycle of dependency. Then explain the child support system as a function of capitalism, as well as the social implications. Then explain just how a system that is turning out dysfunctional, and failing generations does.

Dismissing is not a counter argument, flippant comments are not either. Two options here, demonstrate the validity of your argument, or don't make one. Right?

[–]Igloo32 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

And she complained to anyone who would listen how hard it was to be a single mom living in poverty.

[–]DJ-Roukan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Was like a scourge upon a hard working middle class neighborhood.

Guys in and out, drugs, cops. Filed a complaint against her for loud music (blaring with the windows open). No sooner did the cops leave, she turned it up again in defiance. Called them right up and sent them back.

Felt sorry for the boy she was raising, and where he was going to end up in life.

[–]Igloo32 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I'm not surprised. I fail to see how marriage is if any benefit to men, especially given the high divorce rates and the bias in family courts. There's effectively debtors Prison for men should they fail to comply with what a fucked up legal system decides is right.

[–]DJ-Roukan 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Truth be told, and I hate to say it, there really is no benefit for a man today. There is no challenge to single life that can be applied...but there is a whole lot of fear if one does marry.

[–]theDmc231 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Fafsa loans are from the federal government, most of those kids use loan money to pay for board and tuition

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 7 years ago* (2 children) | Copy Link

Can't tell what point you're trying to make, but a private apartment paid for with an interest-bearing FAFSA loan is not the same thing as public housing.

[–]theDmc231 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

But a school that receives a certain amount of its tuition from federal loans is considered a public school and has to follow federal guidelines

[–]Sproded -1 points0 points1 point 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don’t think anyone is disputing that Texas A&M isn’t public. They’re saying it’s a private dorm that people choose to live in and pay for. The fact that the federal government gives them interest bearing loans doesn’t mean the federal government is necessarily subsidizing it in any substantial way.

[–]J450Nbrrr 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Looks exactly like public housing in Australia

[–]DJ-Roukan 54 points55 points56 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Wow, guy.

That is a brilliant social statement.

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points32 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

It’s sad to see sexism and racism in the culture and climate we have built, am I saying that every person is not going to be racist or sexist, no, do I wish that it could be that way, yes, but if the system of society that we have built itself is inherently sexist/racist we need to change it. We can do better at people we should hold each other up instead of putting people down. Just my personal take though

[–]Tiiimmmbooo 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Don't give OP too much credit, this mem has been around for a long time.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

You’re right this isn’t OC but I thought it fit the issues of this sub so I decided to post it

[–]Tiiimmmbooo 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It 100% fits here, and I really don't care that it's a consistent repost, it just seemed like the commenter thinks you came up with this.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

From my perspective at least I don’t think he’s crediting me with OC but is acknowledging the sexism is parent custody battles

[–]DJ-Roukan 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Correct.

I could see how he may think that. Makes sense, but to be honest, I don't much care if it's my grandfather's meme, it is an absolutely brilliant example of how a picture is worth a thousand words.

Thanks for posting it.

[–]TenYearsAnIncel 24 points25 points26 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Made me lol

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I’m happy to have made one moment of your life better😊

[–]staticsnake 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Totally misleading examples.

The top one is for those who have custody and struggle, they can receive assistance. A guy who has custody and struggles could also apply for assistance and receive it. It's just less common.

The bottom one is where you don't have custody and refuse to pay. But even then a lot of places garnish your wages long before sending you to jail.

One is about breaking the law and the other isn't. Apples and oranges.

I swear the rhetoric in this sub is so toxic and ALWAYS focused on negativity towards women instead of positivity towards men.

[–]VlichedMind 11 points12 points13 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I agree with you for the most part but I feel like the image may have some basis in the general truth. There are so many cases and stories of women who don’t get custody who barely if ever pay child support yet they live completely fine, while men who do it are arrested. Of course not paying child support is a terrible thing and no one should neglect a child like that but this doesn’t just apply to men. Of course there are probably women who get arrested for it and men who don’t but an overwhelming amount of men get arrested while an overwhelming amount of women don’t. But my entire argument might be invalid as I am speaking on assumption alone and I do not have any legal cases to back my idea and It’s 6 am and I’m tired so I’m not going to look it up, so I might be completely wrong about this. Who knows.

[–]throwavay79760 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh so since In am not refusing and just broke the govt will be cool with it then. Your whole point is kinda stereotyped. Single woman struggles, guy behind on child supoort just refuses to pay. Get out of here with this moving the goalposts

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Btw, that photo is of Alcatraz. Other than that factual inaccuracy, I heartily approve.

[–]_ThereWasAnAttempt_ 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This guy prisons.

[–]BCeagle2008 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (14 children) | Copy Link

You only go to prison if you have the ability to pay but refuse. If you cannot pay your child support obligation you should make an application for a downward modification. You can do this on your own without an attorney. It is routine.

[–]Disgruntled_marine 2 points3 points4 points 7 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Just because you can file for it, doesn't mean it will be granted, and that is very dependent on the judge/arbitrator's personal bias

[–]BCeagle2008 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (11 children) | Copy Link

I suppose this is the shit you believe when you spend too much time reading self-serving, one-sided, anecdotal horror stories on websites dedicated to villainizing the child support system.

[–]Disgruntled_marine 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

No, it's from fighting for 5 years to get my daughter away from a "parent" who only cares about the attention she can get from others by using my daughter. It's from spending my days off sitting in court watching other peoples cases where I see people bring in plenty of evidence and get ignored. It's from seeing friends and acquaintances get railroaded and steamrolled by judges who don't care the mom is a drug addict because she says she's getting treatment with out ever having to show proof they are actually seeking treatment.

[–]BCeagle2008 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

That has nothing to do with child support downard modifications.

[–]Disgruntled_marine 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Nope, but you claim that judges don't have a personal bias and filing a piece of paper means it is automatically granted. I would love to live in this world of yours. Shame it doesn't exist.

[–]BCeagle2008 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

I'm an attorney, lmao.

[–]Disgruntled_marine 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Then you should know that judges have personal biasis and don't always follow the law, and just because you file something doesn't mean it will be granted. Yet you claim it never happens.

[–]throwavay79760 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean there are terrible lawyers so its possible, but I would bet that this is a fresh prosecutor who doesnt do family court, and still believes the justice is blind bullshit from L1

[–]BCeagle2008 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I never claimed it "never happens". I never claimed that judges don't have personal biases. I never claimed that judges don't always follow the law.

What I am claiming is that downward modifications are routine. Instead of focusing on that point you go off into some mens' rights rant about custody and how it's biased in favor of mothers.

Get a fucking grip. Downward modifications are routine. They are easily obtained and judges are not looking to "stick it to men" over fucking modifications to child support obligations. It is not an aspect of the family courts that suffer from bias.

This is speaking from both personal and professional experience. Your attitude is typical of people who have experience with the courts - not because the courts are actually that biased, but because the "loser" in any litigation almost always comes away feeling that at least some aspect of the procedure was unfair to them.

[–]Disgruntled_marine 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Please come to this county then and witness it for your self.

[–]throwavay79760 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

So? If you dont practice family law you too are basing your assumptions on what you've been told. If you do work in family court you would never claim that its unbiased.

[–]BCeagle2008 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

We are talking about child support modifications. You people are insane.

[–]Gimpy1405 0 points1 point2 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Agreed, it is childish to be skeptical. The system is working just fine.

It's working fine in Texas

It's working fine in Oklahoma

It's working fine in Detroit

The system is working just fine.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Here’s the point, dummy. A man who lives beyond his means and can’t pay support goes to jail. A woman who does the same does not. Clear?

[+]javerthugo -44 points-43 points-42 points 7 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Tbf it doesn’t show the inside of that public housing it probably sucks

[–]valenin 43 points44 points45 points 7 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, man. I bet the bars in that public housing aren’t even solid steel!

WTF is wrong with you?

[+]javerthugo -37 points-36 points-35 points 7 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
