Consider the following fictional exchanges:

“It is so hard to get decent employees.” “That’s because you keep hiring blacks.”

“I just don’t understand this project at all.” “Well, a woman explained it to you, so what did you expect?”

“I can’t believe he is going out again tonight.” “Oh please, all Hispanics care about is sex.”

All of these statements are offensive, and would rightfully be objected to by advocates of fair representation in the media. However, put the word “man” or “men” in place of “blacks,” “woman,” and “Hispanics” in the above sentences and they’re deemed humorous.

Coincidentally, in 2003, I was talking to a woman in a political class about this very thing. She said that she didn't see what I was talking about, so I suggested she watch Home Improvement since it was on that night. I said, "Watch it and you'll see that Tim is never right, and Jill always is. Not to mention that, Tim constantly screws things up, and Jill is always right about everything." The next time I saw her, she was amazed. She said, "Wow! I never noticed that before, but you're right!"

Ironically enough, soon after that exchange, there was an episode where they made fun of the fact that Jill's always right. Brad's girlfriend was over at their house all of the time, cleaning up after him, fixing him sandwiches, etc. Jill was offended, stating that feminism fought for her right not to do those things for men. The girlfriend looked her straight in the eye and said, "I do it because I want to." And Randy followed it up with, "Yeah mom. Stop being so sexist!" (I'm paraphrasing since I haven't seen the episode in a long time). Point being that, they showed Jill being wrong about something, and stated that equality means having the choice to do something because you want to, not because someone says you have to. (drop in the bucket, but hey, it's something)

I think one of the best shows (that was on air during this time) for men was King of the Hill. It showed men as buffoons (Dale), losers (Bill), and womanizers (Boomhauer), but it also had one of the strongest father figures in recent memory (Hank). In fact, most of the negative male stereotypes also had female counterparts (buffoon = Peggy, loser = ?, womanizer/loose = Nancy).

Not really sure where I was going with this, but I feel like this show needs recognition for being one of the better pieces of media for family men out there.

The Bernie Mac show was a rare show which portrayed males in a positive light. A man takes in his sisters kids due to her drug addiction.

Edit: For any of you who's sarcasm detector is broken, that was sarcasm. It's funny how no one thinks these things are jokes but the shit that comes out of Heigl's mouth is fucking hilarious.
