I used to be overweight years ago. I definitely felt stigmatized. Not so now, I lift weights 4 times a week and throw in some cardio as well. But I can definitely relate to this.

I'm not overweight, but I have really wide hips and shoulders so I don't like wearing shorts

May?

There's abundant evidence that overweight women have advocates that constantly defend their right to participate equally in society, but there's virtually no such advocates for men in the same position. Fat shaming is virtually always a phrase used in reference to women.

That one-sided approach to the problem where all the effort and expenditure are going towards helping stigma against overweight women, is pretty indicative of the stigma in society against overweight men. It combines two of our largest biases.

I agree it's a problem, but I disagree with the solution. I am vehemently against this bullshit of telling fat girls they look great how they are and deserve to be able to date models if they want, and that men are shallow if they reject that. I want that whole mentality eradicated, not extended to men.

I have no sympathy for people who are overweight. No one did that to you. You made the conscious choice to ignore your health, not exercise, and eat more food than you need to. Not only that, but if they chose to do so, they could lose all the weight and be healthy.

Don't try making excuses either like, it's my thyroid. No it isn't, that would make you gain 10-20lbs, not 100-200lbs. You have time to go to the gym, you just don't prioritize it. Obama went to the gym every day. You're not busier than him, sorry. No one forced you to go through the fast food drive through either, and not go to the store to get healthy food. Again, you have the time to do this, you just didn't want to cook, and wanted to plop your ass on the couch the minute you get home. What a miserable life it must be to live like that...

I think the way overweight people are treated in general is poor. There’s no need for it, I used to be quite fat and now I’m not and I’ve noticed such a difference in how im treated but it might be because I have more confidence now. Fat people are seen as greedy and lazy, but over eating is addictive behaviour same in cause as any other. Loving and caring for yourself and dealing with your issues is the only way to overcome it and that’s made harder if people can’t keep nasty comments to themselves

[–]Lethn 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

If you're talking about picking on fat people for the sake of being a cunt I agree, but the fact is fat people are lazy and greedy. The only way the majority of people get fat is by literally sitting, eating and doing no exercise at all.

I can pinpoint exactly when I started to put on weight and calculated that it probably happened right after I learned how to drive because the majority of my exercise I got from walking. Now I'm making sure to do something each day at home just so I stay fit and I'm already feeling a definite improvement for it.

Waxing lyrical about being fat and telling fat people it's not their fault is just as damaging as being a cunt about it. It is their fault, but the thing is they can fix it if they try and change their habits, the problem is a lot of people want a quick fix and think they can just exercise for two weeks and they'll immediately see changes.

If only it were that easy.

I agree with you that while it is a "fault" with their internal wiring causing unhealthy habits, it is true that most often they are coping with stress or internal distress by eating. But the majority of adults already know it's their fault, they're just in a helpless cycle. Most of us have some form of unhealthy habit that they can't break out of that can be over working, alcohol, smoking, weed use, gambling, social media, whatever. Someone telling us it's not a good idea is telling us the part that we already know. I am in agreement that fat should not be seen as healthy and that obese people should not just give up and accept it. But it was only after I stopped feeling guilt and shame about being fat that I lost the weight and started working out. I also think people overly focus on fatness being equal to unhealthiness. It is unhealthy, but a slim person can easily have higher cholesterol, higher glucose levels etc, if their diet is not healthy. Drinking is positively encouraged in the west and if you don't drink you usually have to explain why at least once during most social events. But drinkers are not subjected to the same scrutiny than fat people are. Having to lug your failings around is punishment enough imo, obesity is a crisis but I don't think repeatedly saying how bad it is, is actually helping anyone. I am not saying that I think you're wrong, we're both speaking from our own experience of being overweight after all.

[–]Lethn 1 point2 points3 points 7 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think it's as much of an issue as people think and I think this is just overweight people desperately trying to find a way not to do exercise. It's harsh but this is reality and I'm not going to gloss it over for the sake of protecting peoples 'fee fees'. Now if you've got a situation where douchebags are making fun of fat people for actually going to the gym and getting into shape? Yes, that's damaging, because they're being made fun of for doing the right thing and that does happen.

No, this is just this retarded thing of fat people trying to justify their unhealthy lifestyles and they're attempting to turn it into a political movement.
