Back when facebook was new I used it to get in touch with a bunch of cousins I'd been estranged from since I was a little kid. I struck up a nice relationship with a female cousin and the two of us were sort of the link between the two sides of the family that had become estranged. It was nice for a couple of years and the two of us put together a couple of nice family reunions.

Then once I went to visit her and her family and she was talking about her work as a volunteer for a domestic violence group. She said that sometimes when they'd set up a booth at some event for awareness, sometimes men would approach the table to talk about their experiences as victims. She said,

"I just want to laugh."

And that was the end of that relationship.

I don't see how the drawing shows humour

you misunderstood. the author was not making light of DV against men.

You hear a lot of stories in the news about sport stars/normal guys beating up their significant other all the time. I wanted to attempt to show the situation but with the woman being the abuser and the guy the victim. More or less to see if it would come off as sympathetic or comical because it's a guy being abused.

The comments the guy leaves are questionable.

Why can't we trust the artists expressed intent?

I cringed.

My take is that the artist genuinely can't wrap their head around the abuse of men. They see the man as "silly" and the woman as "sympathetic" (read the comments).

There seems to be some kind of massive blind spot in many people where men who are abused are pathetic because (as with the man in this picture) men should be physically capable of defending themselves from a woman's attack. If he doesn't then, (as in this picture) the image of him is as some mewling, self-pitying, "silly" figure.

Of course, if he were to physically defend himself in any way whatsoever he would instantly transform in the same people's minds into the scum of the earth for daring to raise his hand against a woman.

Lose-lose.

I think the artist is portraying the man as if he were a woman incapable of defending himself and retaliating. This is where the disconnect and inability to understand occurs. The reality is that in most cases of female to male one-sided abuse (IMO) the man is deliberately restraining himself in order to not hurt the woman--he could actually turn the tables in an instant but does not do so, not because he is a pathetic, spineless, mewling creature (as in the picture) but because he genuinely has no tendency towards abuse or violence, and/or doesn't want to be arrested for defending himself in any way.

It used to be comical when women were abused. Now its horrific. Now men are comical when abused.

More or less to see if it would come off as sympathetic or comical because it's a guy being abused.

She came off unsympathetic nor comical

But the image is in a sense accurate. I very clearly remember the last day my mother hit me: it was because I put my hand up to block and she hurt herself and left.

So I spent a few minutes in shock and tried to put myself together (I was probably 15-16) when she came back to show me the bruises and cuts on her hand, saying some shit about how it hurt her as well.

Fuck this shit.

Bullshit headline.

"You hear a lot of stories in the news about sport stars/normal guys beating up their significant other all the time. More or less to see if it would come off as sympathetic or comical because it's a guy being abused."
