Request: Statistics on Domestic Violence

I have two pieces of advice. The first is to check through the sidebar for links on domestic violence or do a search on the sub. Alternatively, you could check /r/MensRightsLinks. I've personally never used it but from what I've heard it seems like a good resource.

Secondly, I'm not sure what you mean about children being the primary victims of domestic violence. The definition of DV is:

violence or physical abuse directed toward your spouse or domestic partner; usually violence by men against women.

While I may take issue with certain aspects of that definition (the latter half) the first part about it applying to a spouse or partner is sort of the main point of DV. Sure, children can be impacted by it and can certainly face abuse from a domestic abuser but they almost cannot, by definition, be "victims of domestic violence".

I don't have data that makes direct comparisons between adults and children. The CDC NIPSV report from 2010 suggests that women are victims of intimate partner violence on slightly more often than men. However, the men's data does not include any numbers on spousal rape(see tables 4.1 to 4.4). The 12 month figures are probably more accurate than the lifetime figures and in those data male victims outnumber female for physical violence but female victims outnumber male when sexual violence is included.

Here are the CDC numbers on child abuse for 2013. About 910 cases per 100,000 children. The problem here it that the child abuse data uses reports from social services and the police but the intimate partner report is collates data from self reporting. The child abuse numbers are probably understated and this is acknowledged on the Child maltreatment fact sheet as well. They suggest that 1 in 7 children are abused in total but there is no explanation as to where that number comes from or whether it includes physical and sexual abuse or not.

Overall though it looks like the numbers are about even when broken down by sex both for adults and children. Women and girls are slightly more likely to be victimized but it's not a significant majority.
