Man went from low technology to high technology to remove those obstacles that have placed restrictions on him, and held him back.

The elephant in the room has become too fat to ignore. Now that we're in the internet age, the information age, the weight of evidence against the elephant is building and becoming widespread. Individual elephants wreck homes when we invite them in, but as a group, they encroach into other peoples forests and villages and steal their resources. Herds of elephants trample people to death. The historical evidence is also building. Who (in the not too distant future) will have a need for an elephant when we have machines and technology to do their work? Thats evolution, of sorts. Thats how it works. Those things which are a liability fall away, and are replaced by safer, more efficient, and low cost alternatives. Further, once men have a permanent presence in space, would it be practical to take herds of elephants there, with the damage they do? To me, the earth looks like its screwed and always will be, but taking elephants into space?

Perhaps this will be the point where we say farewell to our animal friends.
