It is like that because women tend to pick fields such as education, psychology, humanities, which tend to pay less than the fields that most men tend to go into, such as business and engineering. Women also often quit work later on to spend time with their kids. Studies also show men in general work for an average of 45 hours a week, whereas women work an average of 42 hours a week.

The important bit is closer to the end. After controlling for variables, the wage gap between women and men drops to 4 to 7 percent of the wage--or 96 to 93 cents to the dollar, a far cry from 77 cents. So yes, women seem to make less than men, and it is probably due to sexism. It's not fair and should perhaps be addressed, but it is not anywhere close to as big an issue as many have made it out to be.

Check out your country's latest census: Look for the statistics measuring the "gap" between unmarried women and men. The reason you want to look for unmarried women is because the data isn't subject to the bias of married women who don't work, work part-time, etc. l I'm not sure about other countries but Stats Can has this exact measure: according to '06 data, women make 95% of what men do.
