I read the NYU website and followed the link to its supporting Justice Department study (NCVS). The authors of that study claim to have discovered 86 rapes among the approximately 4500 women they questioned. Their method extrapolated from there to the American female college population at large. More than half of those 86 women, though, verbally declined to characterize what had occurred to them as rape. The authors went ahead and characterized it as rape anyway, and extrapolated based on the higher number. This is the Mary Koss trick. "Psychological coercion," by the way, was viewed by the authors as a sufficient condition to characterize an instance of intercourse as rape. Is telling a girl you really, really like her, then never calling again, psychological coercion? I don't know. But I'm not sure any of the respondents knows either. It is certainly a messy and soft way to think about a crime. And perhaps that's the point. In effect, this is political hate speech, both by NYU and our Justice Department. No one actually believes any of this nonsense. It's just a talking point, a vicious and biting criticism of masculinity. Does anyone expect that colleges should warn prospective students of THIS likelihood of rape before they apply? Why not? Are women beginning to dissuade their daughters from attending college? Of course not. Society at large dismisses these statistics as the 'targeted munitions' of the gender war: they exist mainly to harm men, and little further notice need be taken of them.

I'm curious why they use such old resources, between 11 and 13 years old. Especially since newer numbers are out there.

This is what rape stats look like when you apply an intellectually dishonest and sexist definition of 'rape' to the drunken, no-consequences sexual habits of the modern college hook-up culture. Not to mention defining any and all drunken sex as M-on-F rape. It's a complete bastardization of the stats, and it is outrageously misandrous.

One in 5 college women are raped during their college years

Here's a quick sniff test for bullshit:

All US colleges are required to post their rates of violent crimes. The school I went to had approximately 20,000 women students. You know how many reported rapes there were in 2009 (the latest year available)? 3. Did 997 women not report their rape, or is this statistic bullshit?
