I wish the wording on that petition was more clear. Last thing we want is an ERA with the Hayden Rider attached to it to be ratified.

Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article. Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.

Assuming those words are actually applied feminists are not going to like this.

Women stand to gain nothing by this and lose quite a bit.

Equal application of the law without regard for gender mean's women are eligible for the draft, custody and alimony must be applied equitably without regard to gender, same with legal sentencing, funding that only benefits women must either be matched with equal funding for men or else cut, and so on.

/I've heard that a big reason it failed in the 70s was that they were unable to sneak in a provision exempting women from the draft. Apparently that's one male privilege they weren't so keen to get.

Does someone have a proposed wording for the ERA? I can't work out how the ERA differs from the 14th amendment in case law, although I understand why it might be politically worthwhile

The ERA will either force the government to drop many woman's programs or face bankruptcy attempting to fund similar male programs.

Really, women have everything to lose and little/nothing to gain by supporting the ERA. Frankly, that's why it won't pass.
