Perhaps it's their size, strength, or inclination to protect, but fathers appear to be better at keeping predators and bad influences from harming their children.

You could say it's their natural role. Mothers specialize in birthing and nurturing while fathers specialize in protection from externalities.

It's this role which is replaced by the state when it steps in to the family, ejects the father, then feeds itself off the resources which otherwise would have gone to the children.

Is this a fair trade? Is state protection as good?

It's never good when you eject any parent (assuming they're not abusive). Sometimes one parent adapts to take on both roles but ejecting any parent should be only done in extreme situations.

My dad is totally unconfronational, but the fact that he's physically strong (and looks that way) helps with feeling safe. Feeling safe means you're less likely to be intimidated by external pressures.

State is needed for abusive or otherwise neglectful father, but when the state makes it too easy for a mother to pack up and leave with the baby and then get child support - that's when the state is doing more harm than good for the child.

It's like I repeatedly said when discussing why children need Mothers and fathers: The best case scenario is what you have to shoot for. 2nd best is never best if the best is readily available.

Haha, holy shit:

Even dads with average parenting skills can make a real impact on their children's lives

Thanks?

I would love to see the reaction to an article in a mainstream magazine that started off with "Even mothers with average parenting skills can make a real impact on their children's lives".

Won't happen ;-)

But I'm wondering if the intent there is to encourage fathers by making it clear you don't have to be "super-dad" to be effective?

Yeah, I know that's what they were trying to say. But they really did a poor job of wording it, I thought it was funny. It really plays into that "daddy does everything wrong" stereotype that seems to be so common.

[–]TheWheatOne 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Its progress guys. Haven't seen an article this positive about dads in a long time.

[–]--Ping-- 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I came here to post this very response. It's very encouraging to know that time is showing our efforts are important, and just as "life-changing" as anything mothers do.

My honest question is how does this study and conclusion affect children and homosexual couples?

If a mom and dad are both important for various reasons, should children only be allowed (through adoption, fertilization, etc.) to be given to heterosexual couples?

[–]TheAncapWay 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Because moms alone are weak as horse shit.

[–]goingoverseas 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No, because mums alone are only two legs of a table. The other two are the dad. You need both mum and dad for the table to stand.
