Yeah there's a lot of social conditioning at work there. Probably taking advantage of the inexperience of youth as well as personality type play some role in it too. It makes no sense if you believe in equality.

They're been nurtured like this. Like sacrificing themselves for another needs is something they should be proud of. Also societal pressure. I feel it even now. I think I should not sacrifice myself, but if I imagine the sinking ship situation, I don't know if I can stand for myself...

Men have been told their entire lives that they are expendable. It's just the cultural water we all swim in. It's not questioned by most people. Just like so many previous wrongs were not questioned.

I would argue that men treat themselves as expendable because of biology.

Pretty much our sole purpose as a species is to reproduce. Arguably, women are more important for that role, since women can only have maybe 15 children in their life tops, and men can have hundreds. Also because of how men adapted to be stronger because women were often pregnant or breastfeeding. It's why men took on more dangerous hunting/fighting tasks, women took on safer gathering tasks that they could complete with their children present.

I would argue that because of biology, men have always been the first to take on the self-sacrificial role when danger is present. Women were the last defense. It's millions of years of biology you're working against to try to remove that instinct.

Because they, like everyone else, ought to do so. Death is not so horrifying a thing that it ought to impede us from doing things that are important -- be it constructing buildings or risking life and limb to save each other. I like to think most people would rather go themselves than lose someone they care deeply about.

Social isolation and accusations of guilt and cowardice are powerful motivators for many, though.

Those are your words but you were describing a situation where society treats men like shit, not the men themselves. It's like saying "Why did black slaves in the South think so little of themselves? Why did they agree to be slaves? Why didn't they rebel?" Says more about you than them.

Personally, I'm convinced a lot more of human behavior comes from instinct and how we're wired and our rational brain plays tricks on us to convince us it's more in charge than it really is.

There are quit a few animals were the mother has strong instincts to guard her offspring - don't get between a mother bear and her cubs for example.

There are examples of males guarding females for the purpose of mating with them. Bison do this when it gets close to the time for the females to be in heat. Lions kick out other adolescent males from the pride.

I don't think expendable is the right word, the instinct of lemmings jumping off a cliff is a myth. But a male having a desire to protect his prospects for reproducing makes perfect sense. One way to turn a woman on is if you can make her feel protected.

It has gone way to far in modern society where a woman expects a complete stranger to bail her out and not even show any gratitude, much less any chance of him winning her favor.

So imo, the inclination a man has to protect his mate and children (perhaps parents, siblings, and single females showing they're attracted to him) is pretty much an instinct. The part that extends it beyond that to women in general is a messed up cultural norm that needs to go.

It’s built into us, just like how men view themselves as protectors and providers of their family. It’s the right thing to do.
