Repeat offenses are not a gender specific issue, nor is the risk of offending, or teaching them not to offend.

Men and women are both negatively affected in similar ways when imprisoned, and implying that women have to rebuild their lives and require support, whilst men don't, angers me. Not to mention the fact that, apparently, according to this argument, when men are imprisoned, there are the women and wives that can help with the kids...

Sure, a man would never look after his child whilst his criminal wife was behind bars, right?

The report even points out the fact that the wife may have to pay bills when the husband is behind bars, because, sure, men would never have to do that if the situation was reversed, right?

Somewhere along the line, did people just forget that men are humans with feelings?

I love my course, and my friends, but man am I ashamed to be part of an institution that pushes this pretentious shit onto its students.

Ohh man thats bullshit my druggie prostitute mom loved prison, whenever she used up the welfare she got for me and didnt want to be am adult just get arrested for shop lifting or prostitution and bam nice comfy 5 month jail sentence but with good behavior 1 month if that and things just worked themselves out while she relaxed in prison.

This bullshit myth that all women are innocent and should never go to jail because they are victims has to be stopped. My mom was a lazy fucking human that never worked a day in her life like all her single mother friends, the only victims were the children and the fathers.

When men are imprisoned there is often a network of women – mothers, girlfriends, wives – who are caring for their children, paying the bills, and keeping their lives going so that they can more easily slip back into their family life when they are released. When women come out of prison they need support to rebuild their lives.

Goddamn bullshit straight through. First "fact" starts with often, but the last "fact" assumes the worst possible thing happens to every woman. It's completely bullshit and there's no real facts, just feelings on how they think it is.

I took a course in college called "Gender And Crime" and based on the name, you would think it was an equal representation of both genders. It wasn't. It was more like "why women aren't to blame for their crimes" and one of the assignments was to read an article just like this, articulating that women have a hard time in prison because 1. They can't do their hair/makeup/nails etc the way they like. 2 they're away from their families/children 3. They often feel unsafe and depressed in prison.

I raised my hand and said "don't males have the same problem, plus worrying about getting raped/beaten up". Was told we aren't talking about men, my opinion is invalid.

Needless to say I didn't do so hot in that class.

Punishment in general doesn't work for women because women an whine their way into the hearts of stupid, powerful other people, many of whom want to appear, for various reasons, to "respect" women ore highly than men.

"If you're a criminal defendant, it may help—a lot—to be a woman. At least, that's what Prof. Sonja Starr's research on federal criminal cases suggests. Prof. Starr's recent paper, "Estimating Gender Disparities in Federal Criminal Cases," looks closely at a large dataset of federal cases, and reveals some significant findings. After controlling for the arrest offense, criminal history, and other prior characteristics, "men receive 63% longer sentences on average than women do," and "[w]omen are…twice as likely to avoid incarceration if convicted." This gender gap is about six times as large as the racial disparity that Prof. Starr found in another recent paper."

Judges in the UK are already being told, as a matter of public policy, to sentence criminals less harshly if they are female, in the according to the Equal Treatment Bench Book, published by the Judicial Studies Board (JSB).

Don't give up on learning. Here's some relevant knowledge. The ratio of men to women in prison in England and Wales rose from 15.5 in 2003 to 20.8 in 2014 (through 30 Sept.). From 1750 to 1920, the punishment sex ratio in England and Wales was relatively constant and almost never higher than 10 men per woman absent in punishment.
