Wonderful column on campus rape

I used to live across the street from a major university. It got hammered in the local press this weekend because in 2011 it had no sex crimes occur on campus at all.

But it is getting better, apparently in 2012 they had 11 reported incidents and 7 are rape.

WTF is wrong with these people? If I was a male student I would be scared to death.

his is a very well argued piece from the legendary Thomas sowell. The only part that I am unsure about is the two paragraphs in which he talks about how the proponents of unisex living arrangements are somehow responsible for rape. I would have thought the better line to take is that rapists ate responsible for rape.

But in general, every line is like an arrow and the case as a whole is like a battering ram. He simply sets aside shibboleths like the idea that women are oppressed and rape is the tool of violence in their oppression and makes very simple and essential points that must be as infuriating for his opponents as they are hard to resist for the rest of us.

I think the schools trying to resolve these issues themselves is a disservice to both parties. They tend to have their own agendas, which tends to be the financial type, and will have a biased view.

I have an aquaintence who was accused of rape a few years ago when we were both in college. I believe the woman was a fellow student, but it happened off campus during winter break (if what I was told is correct.) Due to this, it was handeled through the courts and the school wasn't involved (at least that we could tell.) He was allowed to continue attending the university while dealing with the allegations. He was found not guilty and graduated last year.

this is a terrible article. Sowell starts out on the right foot with his engaging two facts. But then he goes on to use an anonymous straw man "they" which he demonizes for half the article. not giving any specific examples that he has a problem with, not quoting any actual feminists who "pushed for unisex living arrangements on campus, including unisex bathrooms, and who have put condom machines in dormitories and turned freshman orientation programs into a venue for sexual “liberation” propaganda". He has concerns about how the justice department is handling rape on campus, so do i. But the official position is not "presuming the accused to be guilty and not letting constitutional safeguards get in the way." Instead of simplifying the entire issue into one biased sentence and complaining about it he should give a suggestion on how to improve the presidents position. Sowell finishes with an unsubstantiated story that just so happens to make him look good. again this is a terrible article. It is extremely biased, a straw man is easy to poke holes in. It is not insightful. feminists are bad, obama is bad, which feminist is bad? in what way? how can we as citizens correct the bad political position? he skims the surface of the issue without providing any deeper conclusions. Just because the article tends to agree with the men's rights platform does not mean it is well written or well argued.
