Can I use physical force to stop someone from walking away after they assaulted me?
Not really. I have a sense of justice and I'd like justice to be served to someone who assaults me. I'm not going to let them just walk away. I will use force to stop them from getting away.
Nope. He was going for justice, in an ideal world the authorities would have provide him the justice he deserved, unfortunately the world we live in isn't ideal.

You didn't answer my question. Can you stop someone who committed a crime against you from leaving?
I think you're making an assumption here that is not entirely correct:
Are you certain about this? Because I've seen many videos of cops using extreme amount of violence to detain someone that has committed a crime. If it's legal for them to use violence to detain someone that assaulted you, why isn't it legal for you to do so?
