Cynical view: beer (or whatever alcohol you prefer) is the opiate of the masses. Alcohol keeps the working masses calm and in order. As long as they make enough to buy their beer every evening they keep working and don't make trouble for the rich and the politicians.

And, yeah, like many others have said... Alcohol is a legal exception due to it's historical use. If it was invented yesterday, it's be banned by tomorrow.

Personally, I am not a big alcohol fan. I'll have a drink with everyone else, but it's not my drug of choice. Much prefer weed. That hits my personal sweet spot.

I do find it quite ironic alcohol is legal when cannabis is illegal (in most places) despite the fact alcohol is clearly the more dangerous, more addictive substance.

Professor David Nutt headed up a study which found that when you look at both danger to the individual and society, alcohol is more dangerous than all illegal drugs.

Obviously the danger to society part is also influenced by alcohol's sheer popularity when compared to illicit substances, but look at how harmful it is compared to common illegal drugs. In the UK the most popular illegal drugs are cannabis, cocaine, and MDMA. They are all much less dangerous than alcohol. Indeed the WHO did a study into cocaine use and found most of it is purely recreational (not addictive) and virtually harmless.

And yes you ever seen an alcoholic? Worse than a smackhead because when they rattle they know they're about to have a seizure. Heroin withdrawal doesn't cause potentially fatal seizures but alcohol withdrawal sure does.

That said the reason it's socially acceptable and popular is because it's good at being a social lubricant, and it does indeed do that job well.

I am not an MD or anything but LSD, in the short run, probably fucks you up - in the long run - less than ethanol. I don't go in for that or even weed.

I am alone in a city 10,000 KM from home and waiting for another 4 months for my fiance to join me. So I "self medicate" for the time being.

So tonight, I have curled up with a bottle of Bacardi and that will take me into oblivion.

I drank some in high school, but stopped drinking around age 19. It makes you sick if you overdo it, it can cause blackouts which is just asking to get taken advantage of, and it tastes terrible. I like grapes... but not with the added flavour of nail polish remover, thanks.

I'm still fun at parties; I like weed. I just don't really get the appeal of alcohol - makes people so sloppy.

Yeah but it kills you brain cells, ages you, and makes you fat. I only drink twice a month at the most. I used to drink more in my early 20s though.

Hooray! I'll talk about it for more then a second.

It's a wonderful drug. However, because I'm on anti-depressants, it makes me sleepy if I drink too much, so it's almost like it's a built in way to keep me from drinking myself stupid. I have noticed if I don't drink beer and stay with hard liquor, it's easier for me to stay awake. Plus I have to pace myself. If I drink too much too fast, I start to get sleepy.

I also love mixing drinks. I've got more money now so after I finish my basement, I might get my downstairs bar back up and functioning a little better.

I don't like drugs.

The way I like to drink alcohol is 1-2 beers or glasses of wine

At low doses and with a little weed it feels a little like taking a Percocet

At high doses it's just sloppy and sort of painful
