TRP submission argues

the abuse of psychoactive drugs is predominantly a female problem

(1) The first link is to a graph showing higher "Percent Depression Use" (presumably this means drug use) for women than men. That's not evidence of a higher rate of abuse.

(2) The next two links state that men are less likely to go to a doctor for help. That's not evidence of abuse either (and it may be largely responsible for the above drug use rates).

(3) The fourth link is a HuffingtonPost article that directly contradicts the TRP hypothesis. Repeatedly.

Alcoholism, for example, affected roughly five men for every woman in the 1980s. . . . 2002 the ratio had shifted to 2.5 men to every woman.

This article, then, details that substance abuse is (still) a predominantly male problem, though the gap has been rapidly falling in recent years.

(4) TRP seems to decide any treatment is overtreatment. The submission says women "overstate" their symptoms but the link, again, only shows that they're treated more often.

For example, nearly 40% of women with severe depression are treated with drugs in that graph (versus about 20% of men), but there's no explicit argument in the submission about why 40% indicates overstated symptoms or overtreatment. The implicit position is that none of them needed treatment despite severe depression. That would be why "untreated men" are seen as a better category than "women seeking treatment," too--treatment is bad.

(5) The HuffingtonPost article also contradicts the TRP-explanation for women's drug use.

TRP:

Women love talking about themselves. The only thing better than that for a woman is when other people talk about her and make her into some sort of victim. . . . a woman is much more likely to overstate her condition . . . women are more likely to categorize their problem as severe.

Versus the linked source:

Now the scales have tipped the other way and, in some scenarios, pain is being over-treated with addictive medications even when non-addictive approaches would suffice. . . . Today, prescription painkillers are a drug of choice among women, in part because women are more likely to suffer from chronic pain. . . . Women are more often prescribed painkillers and for longer periods of time than men. . . . the numbers don't tell the whole story. Drugs' negative effects strike women harder and faster than men. . . . Drug abuse escalates into addiction more quickly in women than it does in men, even when using the same (or smaller) dose, largely because of physiological differences such as women's slower metabolism and ratio of fat to water in the body.

All together, the TRP-evidence showed that substance abuse is predominantly male, despite the advantages of fewer being prescribed substances and these substances posing less physical risk to their bodies, and that there's no evidence supporting TRP's explanatory hypothesis (but there is lots of evidence for other explanations).

The TRP post concludes warning that "hamsters" are crazy and dangerous. Given the factual mistake, would it be good advice to reverse this and let TRP know it is truly unpredictable medicated men who pose the real threat?
