TL/DR - How do I keep myself positive, happy, and nag-free when I constantly have to either nag or clean up after a sloppy housemate?
How old are you and how familiar are you with RPW? I'm 31, and I've been lurking since October.
What is your relationship status? Married 6 years, but we've been together since we were teenagers.
What is the problem? (Don’t badmouth your SO!) DH and I sublet to a cousin of mine. This cousin, we'll call him A, is a stand up guy, and I honestly can't think of many other people I would trust to live with us and our baby daughter. The problem is that A is a puer aeternus (eternal boy/peter pan syndrome/whatever). His mother often still feels she has to call him on his phone to make sure he wakes up in time to attend his classes, and he is often unintentionally inconsiderate when it comes to cleaning up after himself. It doesn't matter how many times he's reminded that my kitchen knives do not go in the dishwasher, or that he needs to put ingredients away and wipe down the counters after he's done cooking, he just doesn't seem to see the mess unless it is specifically pointed out to him. Unfortunately, since I have no intention of cleaning up after him, this involves me following along after his clean up jobs and telling him to wipe the tomato sauce off the cabinet, or the beet juice off the floor, and for-the-hundredth-time please put away the goddamn salt! This habit of nagging (for that is what it is) my cousin is a problem, because I've caught myself starting to slip off the STFU wagon once or twice when it came to my husband. Just like complaining begets complaining, it seems that nagging will also snowball into a meteor if resentment alarmingly fast. I don't know how to resolve this. I don't want to play either maid or mommy to A, and I don't see a third choice. Him moving out is not an option right now, but DH is getting (understandably) sick of hearing me complain about A's habitual sovenliness.
Edited for spelling.
