Great video. The portion talking about 'sluts' is particularly important for people to hone in on and pay attention to. There are reasons why we encourage women to minimize their 'N' count. I will never understand the argument that a woman is somehow happier if she sleeps around and engages in numerous 'no string' encounters.

I do wish there were links to the studies etc that were mentioned in the video.

It's about having a pattern of bad behavior, making poor choices. Having personality, mental, or 'self-esteem' issues can help explain why a person does certain things like sleep around (or drink heavily, or use drugs). Some people may develop behavioral/personality issues as a result of sleeping around. For others, sleeping around is a warning sign that the person is likely to have other issues.

This is a sub dedicated to helping women develop and improve their romantic relationships. It's important for women to understand why marriage, family minded, and good men will most likely take issue with a woman being a slut-hound.

I don't know anything about the sources (and haven't looked at the ones that have been linked), and they could very well be useless or insubstantial.

What about the studies seemed unsatisfactory to you? If you have the time/interest - you could write a thread about the sources. Talk about how they are flawed, and share your ideas for creating better studies in the future.

Collecting data is one thing - drawing conclusions from that data is another thing. It's very easy to skew and paint things in drastically different lights depending on the angle being pushed.

I've seen an important point made on the PPD sub - that science and studies aren't really necessary because this isn't an academic sphere. We are talking about people and interactions and impressions and preferences and goals. I tend to agree with perspective overall. Yeah, it would be/is nice when there's some research or study that can provide additional insight, but I don't consider it a 'must.'

The points in the video are great. Her statement about how kids need to stop thinking that 'traditional' means 'buzz-kill'/miserable really stood out to me. People do tend to marginalize and dismiss things simply because they are traditional.

I saw a clip of her interviewing some scantily clad women walking around to protest 'catcalling' and street harassment.

"What's my solution to catcalling? Certainly not walking around in my underwear."

here is the video if you want to watch it. 6:44 is when the interaction that I quoted above takes place.

As they are crossing the street - they are honked at - and the protesters cheer and clap. It seems unlikely that the people in the cars read their signs, and were simply reacting to the women dressed like bimbos.

I love how she decided to dress for the video as well.

It's really painful watching these videos. The idiocy of the interviewees is palpable but there's no justice because they lack the cognitive ability to understand how little sense they make.

I'm paraphrasing another similar interaction as the one you linked (from the Vancouver SlutWalk) but it was equally obnoxious:

"Are you going to be using these videos?"

"Well it's a public space, so yes."

"But you interviewed specific individuals."

"Yes but all of them consented to be interviewed."

"Okay well now they are withdrawing their consent."

"That's not how consent works."

"Don't you think it's a little ironic considering the event you're at?"

"If a woman consents to having sex with a man, and then the next day regrets it, she can't 'withdraw her consent' and call him a rapist - do you think that's rape?"

"You're sounding a little like a 12 year old now because that is completely irrelevant"

I wanted to reach into the screen to strangle her...it was the most simple, fitting, and accurate analogy - but of course, completely dismissed. I know Camille can make a few points on it better than I can (arrested development, plus a theory she mentioned about BPers not understanding analogies well - if I recall correctly). But regardless of the explanation, it's really infuriating to watch and only makes me respect Lauren more for consistently interacting with people like that.

There's another video where she talks to people at a slut walk and after talking to her a couple of people "withdrew their consent" to being filmed and interviewed and she just looked at them and told them that's not how consent works.

edit: found the video. it starts where my favorite interview by her of all times starts but the whole video is worth watching.

This video is fantastic! Thank you for sharing! I found her discussion of community to hit a little close to home. As a person who is a relatively new city (moved 6 months ago) and someone who doesn't go to a church, I'm really struggling to fill this void? Is this a common thing?

Oh I absolutely LOVED this video. This is so great. I definitely agree that people have to do their own research to have their own personal convictions about it. Having a typical housewife experience is such a fulfilling role in life. It makes me so sad that people look down on moms (just for being moms) and cant phantom the idea of a woman that likes to be a big part of family and community. LOVED this message, great vid.
