Cultural RPW differences

I'm from Kenya. It's still a conservative society and most people are religious. The church holds a lot of influence in public opinion.

A lot of Kenyans also place emphasis on their traditional customs and values especially the older generation. Most Kenyan cultures are patriarchal in nature. Family is of high importance and most are quite close-knit. The man is the head of the household and the wife(or wives) is his helper and supporter. The captain-first mate dynamic is nothing new in my (Luo) culture. There is clear division of duties in the home. The wife is expected to do the cooking, cleaning and child-minding while the husband provides for the home and protects against intruders.

My mother worked as a teacher to help my dad support us but she was always home by six to make the family a meal. She taught my sisters and I how to cook traditional food like 'ugali' and 'chapati', she would make sure we did all our chores and divided them equally. She never contradicted my dad in front of us. She has always been a good first mate to my dad and we are all lucky to have her.

My dad is the law in his house. Either toe the line in his house or find somewhere else to live. He has been a good example of what a Captain should be.

I'm English too. Beauty standards definitely differ from those of the USA and also amongst the English regions. Where I live, girls start wearing makeup between 11 and 14 and if you're 16 and not wearing it daily, your seen as weird. Every man I speak to about it is quite open about the fact that tasteful makeup makes a woman look more attractive. I used to visit the South East regularly and was shocked by all the unmade faces (and greasy hair and hippy clothes). What I hear from the US is very different again, is it really true that there are lots of people who think teenagers shouldn't wear makeup? It's the stereotypical thing here for a teenager to wear too much.

On the other hand, we don't go for the mega white perfectly straight teeth. I mean, no one wants them to be yellow and horrible and a lot of people have braces to straighten theirs out, but it seems like a large percentage of middle class Americans spend a lot on cosmetic dentistry and often have those veneer things where they file your own teeth down put perfectly even ones on top. That exists here but I've never known anyone with it and I've known professional models and such. Cosmetic dentistry is usually only used for very obvious problems.

I definitely agree with you about manners too. Being shouty or aggressive or demanding is even more of a red flag here than in the states. Being sweet and nice is so important to being relationship material, the whole 'bitches are cool/sexy' thing doesn't really exist here (women will still be bitches but go to great lengths to hide this fact from men, being a bitch to men is done much more subtly through manipulation). Men want women who are chatty and friendly and fun, not sassy or stroppy. I know this is all basically true of the US, but I feel like these things are a particular focus in English culture.

I know this is kind of the opposite of what your asking about, but it seems like the 'sensitive' archetype that is often encouraged in men the US isn't here. Women in England are very open about wanting a manly man and not someone who is 'too nice' or a pushover.
