fun free date ideas for after work?

Here are a few things my wife and I have enjoyed:

Going on walks [cliche, I know; but it's classic for a reason]
Get some drinks and popcorn, put a Netflix standup comedian on instead of your typical show, and pretend you're at a comedy club
Arrange a city-wide scavenger hunt; leave clues around your neighborhood, and make the last one end in your bedroom; this doubles as going on a walk if you hide some of the clues in the middle of a park, away from the parking lot; lots of great relational time along the way. For even greater fun, have a friend write the clues and hide them for you so you can both do it together. Offer to return the favor so they don't feel like they're getting jipped.
Dust off an old board game. Play it on a picnic table in a park with some sandwiches.
Lug your mattress into the living room, shut off the breakers and tell him the power's out, so you're going to have a living room camp-out for the night.
Head to a busy street, bring a snack from home, find a park bench, and just people watch for hours. This makes for great conversation.
Most urban cities have a local theater group that'll do free outdoor plays a couple times a week.
Go to the mall and put a bunch of ridiculous outfits in your cart and take turns trying them all on without any intent actually to buy any of them. Bonus points if you both agree to put a few items of lingerie in there.
Go to a playground that doesn't likely have kids everywhere and just bring out your inner-children and nostalgia.

You don't have any bikes, Frisbees, board games or the like around the house

My SO and I love to go hiking together! Optional bonus that does require an upfront investment: we both have hammocks, so we'll often bring the hammocks in a backpack and hike until we find a place to string them up, then just chill for a while and talk, read, stare at the trees around us. I highly recommend it. Gets you both moving and soaking up some nature goodness, plus it usually facilitates great conversation.

Also, make dinner together. Find a fun recipe and start chopping. It's a good way to bond, talk, learn something new together (which is great for your relationship according to science), and then enjoy a great end product that you created together.

Have a reading date. My SO and I are big readers, and we'll often get together just to snuggle up and read our own books. It's a good way to be together and not feel the need to interact (good if one or both had a stressful day), while still getting snuggles. Plus your books give you something to talk about. My parents do this too. It's adorable. Also I recommend going to the library together to pick out books!

Once I did a "Culinary world tour". It lasted a week, one day per continent. It was fun to research and even more fun to cook.

Day 1 (Sat) - North America -- BBQ pulled pork, corn on the cob, cole slaw

Day 2 (Sun) - South America -- Steak, chimichurri, mango salad

Day 3 (Mon) Africa -- Lamb, Injera bread, chick peas.

Day 4 (Tues) Asia -- Sushi, Sashimi, salad with miso dressing.

Day 5 (Weds) Europe -- Irish stew, broccoli colcannon, pub salad

Day 6 (Thurs) Australia/NZ -- Steaks, mushrooms, slaw, fresh tomatoes

When we finished dinner, he asked if there was going to be an Antarctica night. I said there was. Since the people stationed on Antarctica come from around the world, Antarctica night could be anything he wanted. He looked at me, smiled, and said "Chef's choice."

Day 7 (Friday) Antarctica -- Roast duck with spicy peach sauce, asparagus, baked potatoes, green salad

Board game olympics. Bike ride. Picnic. Themed movie nights (dollar store decoration or thrifty crafts + sexy outfit). Think "finding nemo" or anything free to watch. Have a fashion show with your naughtiest things. Shop for and Cook a new recipe together and eat at home. (Under 20$) Have an internet war game : cutest puppy pic, funniest gif, meme, etc. Theme it with whatever. Take a walk, stroll through a mall holding hands, get a sweet treat and people watch. Make fun of silly items. Don't shop, just look around together.

go somewhere you can make a fire and cook marshmallows/ make smores. Go to a private area at some lake/river and go swimming.

Go shopping together at the grocery store and make dinner at home. Pasta recipes are always very cheap, or you can make something like chicken salad on crackers and only spend 10 dollars. Cooking together is fun too, with some good music playing. Make sure everything is very clean and peaceful before hand! It can be very romantic
