I kind of had an epiphany a couple of nights ago. I have been trying to understand my faults in my last relationship, don't want to share to much of the relationship on here because my ex did a lot he shouldn't have done (illegal stuff), that was mostly why it ended, but I know I wasn't perfect either.

Anyway, I'm dating this guy now, and a couple of nights ago he was going to to sleep at my place after his late shift, then we were going to go on this trip early in the morning. When he was supposed to be here he didn't show up and I hadn't heard anything from him, sent him a text and asked if he were on his way and if he wanted anything to eat. No answer. I got a bit sad, it was late and I was tired and I had really looked forward to our trip.

One hour later he contacted me, said he was really sorry, but they had a crisis at work right when his shift ended (he's a firefighter) so he was stuck at work, and didn't know for how long, but he didn't think he would make it. My first reaction was to get upset and I almost wrote an annoyed reply about how he could have told me earlier because I was sitting up at night waiting for him, luckily I took a step back and calmed my hamster. He was in no fault of what had happened and he contacted me at first opportunity even though he was on duty. I was being selfish thinking about myself, why would I get mad at him...

I know my first reaction would have been how I reacted to my ex and I actually feel kind of ashamed to even think like that in this situation. I think RPW have helped me to see myself better from the outside, it sucks that our plans got postponed, but it wasn't his fault, he couldn't have done anything different, he even had to work 4 hours overtime after an 8 hour shift, I could just go back to sleep.

But even though I calmed myself and wrote a nice reply to him, I still had the first reaction in my head, and I want to get rid of that way of thinking. How do I work on that? I want to get to the right way of thinking as a reaction, not get a bad reaction, step back to calm myself and then think the right way, if that made any sense.
