I am 21 and he’s 24. We have been in a committed relationship for a year and 9 months, discussed marriage/kids. For about 2-3 months, we have been going through a rough patch fueled by my emotional issues. We had some issues with bickering, but things weren’t too bad in general.

Problem: 2 weeks ago, my boyfriend basically broke up with me because he “didn’t see me as a life partner anymore". Apparently he’d been having these thoughts for months but didn’t communicate anything to me. His main reasons were: I’m “too quiet” around his family, emotional immaturity, not enough career goals. We talked through it, and he realized the lack of communication denied me the chance to grow and be a better partner. So he agreed to give it another chance to make it work.

After that, I was so happy and relieved it wasn’t over, so things were good. My boyfriend admitted his emotions had clouded his judgment and he still felt the same about me. He agreed to work on communication instead of letting things build up.

This weekend we went on a trip with his family, and resentment began to build up. I felt like I was putting all this effort to make his family like me, but it could all be for nothing. I couldn’t stop dwelling on things he said to me during the breakup conversation. He told me yesterday that he’s planning to be with me forever, but I had a hard time believing him.

Solutions: As far as his reasons for breaking up, I’ve started to address them. I’m starting an intensive 6 month therapy program tomorrow. As mentioned, I made an effort to get closer with his family this weekend. And I applied to a billion internships.

My boyfriend is satisfied with that, but I’m bitter. He thinks I’ll get over it with time, but for me it’s getting worse. I have no idea how to repair things between us and to trust him again. Any advice is much appreciated.
