I made a reddit just for this purpose, because I needed a group of unbiased answers. I'm just going to start from the beginning because this is sort of a long story. I'm sorry for how long this is and thank you to anyone who does respond:

I started dating a guy in senior year of high school. This was my first boyfriend; I had been too focused on school before, didn't really want a boyfriend and just didn't trust in dating in high school. But we quickly became best friends in the beginning of senior year and he knew me on a different level than everyone else. So come February, we were honest about our feelings and started dating. It was pretty much the worst thing I could have done: he had anger issues, was controlling and possessive, was emotionally and psychologically abusive. I broke up with him after 6 months of losing my best friends, angering and disappointing my family, being constantly afraid, constantly tired and crying and losing about 20 pounds from the stress and fear I constantly faced. I bombed my AP exams and basically every major milestone of senior year was miserable for me (graduation, prom, awards ceremonies, goodbye dinners, grad bash). He didn't want me hanging out with anyone else, talking to anyone else, doing things with anyone else. We had to hang out all 7 days of the week, after school, on holidays, etc.

So I gave up on the relationship before starting college and broke up with him in August. That first year or so after we broke up we talked on and off. I was pretty messed up at that point but was learning to take a stand for myself and not give into his anger. I missed the person he was before we started dating, my normal guy friend. I told him if we were ever to be friends, he needed to fix himself first. He depended on me for everything, to make him happy. After that first year, he did learn to control his anger, to become a better person, and we started to become friends again. My hurt went away, he did a lot to make up for everything and he came out a completely different person. So I began to trust him again, despite everything. He became someone I could lean on when things got really rough at home and that I could just be myself around.

He's been my best friend for the past year and a half or so. But I am unsure if it's worth having him in my life anymore. I made some pretty stupid decisions and have been sleeping with him since we started going out. When we first broke up, it was more something that really just made me feel good and got my mind off of things. Then it was just habit, something that happened. I tend to be a very reserved person so just going out and having casual sex with a stranger was not okay with me.

I haven't been interested in dating because there has been no one that has caught my eye or that I've wanted to. Last fall however, he started dating someone, but it was something he did abruptly and out of spite. It came out of a conversation where I told him I was fine with him having a girlfriend and he basically did it to see if I really was. I didn't have a problem with him dating but he basically stopped speaking to me for several days, which hurt because we talked everyday. So I had a talk with him telling him I felt like I was losing my best friend - it was a whole big thing but we got over it. He eventually broke up with the girl.

After that we continued as we were. I asked him multiple times throughout the year if he was dating anyone, looking for people, etc. I mentioned to him multiple times that I was fine with sex as long as he wasn't sleeping with me and seeing other people or sleeping with other people. Something pretty typical, I would assume. He reassured me multiple times he didn't want to date because he had one more year of college and didn't wanna get involved and didn't wanna have sex with random people.

He visited me for July 4th weekend. We had a great weekend, mostly platonic but slept together once. He left back to college on Monday. On Tuesday, he told me he was going out with his friends. On Wednesday, he told me he was going to a nearby park with friends again. On Saturday, he told me he was going out for lunch with someone he met.

I didn't care about this again. If he found a girl, that was completely fine with me. However, I then found out he slept with the girl on Tuesday and had actually been talking to her for weeks, meeting up with her and lying to me by saying he was hanging out with his friends. He let it slip while we were talking and finally decided to fess up to everything. My issue with this was that he gave me hell and we had a huge fight when I mentioned I had a lunch date with someone. He told me he would be uncomfortable visiting me, even cuddling with me if there was a chance there was someone else. When I told him I was upset because he said this but found sleeping with someone else okay, he said "well shit changes." He had the audacity at that point to ask me to not date for the summer, for him. He told me that if things progressed with the guy, we probably wouldn't remain friends. I hadn't even hung out with the guy when we had this talk. However, he doesn't see how hypocritical he's being about this new girl.

I just feel betrayed and upset that he's been lying to me for so long. I told him there could be no friendship if he never trusted me and his response was that I was too sensitive. But before this, I had spoken for hours with his girlfriend in the fall getting to know her. He liked someone else that lived in the same city I'm currently living in and I told him to go visit her since they wouldn't be so close again.

I don't know if I'm overreacting. It's a complicated situation that I did my best to describe. I'd just like some input. Is it worth it to stay friends? He's been an asshole and treated me pretty shitty over this but in other areas, he's been a pretty good friend.
