You have carte blanche to read romance novels, lucky you!

Anne Brontë spells out pretty much everything that can go wrong.

Read the Tenant of Wildfell Hall, critically, and see what went wrong in Helen's first marriage and how she failed to vet. How did she know that Markham would be different? (Personally I dislike this book very much but it is instructional).

You can read Wuthering Heights, too, but be warned it's very depressing. (I also dislike this book very much, Anne Brontë is a sadist.) Why did Cathy marry Linton? Why did Isabella marry Heathcliff? From your description you remind me of Isabella. What clues did both women have that these were terrible decisions? What lies did they tell themselves?

For things going right: anything by Jane Austen. She goes through the meetings, courtship, how men will show their attraction, how ladies decide between suitors, what is forgivable, what is not.

The part where you said you tend to be submissive quickly with men who haven't earned it stood out to me because I'd often open myself up emotionally to people that turned out to be incompatible. On one hand, I equated that being genuine(?) while on the other it's not commensurate to chemistry. How have you dealt with it?
