Submission is earned through trust. You submit to your husband, because you trust him to make the right decision, through experience. Passiveness is simply a desire to avoid confrontation. You're passive to a new beau, because you don't want to argue.

Submission is earned when a person that knows better than you is willing to take the lead. Passiveness is being someone's doormat, whether they know better than you or not.

I’m actually more passive with a lot of other people than I am with my boyfriend, because I too struggle with anything that feels like conflict. I feel safe with my boyfriend which means I trust him to make good decisions but it also means I can share my feelings and desires. I don’t have to fear rejection from him for being vulnerable and he doesn’t feel challenged because he knows that I have complete faith in him.

You can be submissive to you husband's direction for how the marriage and family is going and still be an active and not passive partner in the mission. All your actions and the little decisions you make every day contribute to the overall plan. If anything is a big enough decision that it impacts the direction, run it by your captain. If he has delegated a task to you, take action, give it your best effort. At no point do I feel like a passive passenger, I am the first mate and I have full authority on my watch.

Passive is taking what is handed to you, whether it's good or bad. Submissive is when you find someone whose judgement you trust, someone you can defer to, and do. You can also be passive by not having an opinion, or by not speaking up when you need something. It's important to do those things and to learn to voice them in a way that serves the collective goal.
