If you don't already wax or shave your bikini area, it may be a good idea to pay a professional the first few times.

Invest in a good lotion with a cooling element (like aloe Vera).

It also might be worth looking into laser hair removal. Expensive upfront, but over the span of a lifetime you end up saving.

I prefer to shave with men's razor brands. They are sturdier and the extra blades make such a difference. Also try shaving with hair conditioner instead of shaving cream. I have been doing that since middle school and it's great!

I get ingrown hairs from waxing just as bad as shaving. I ended up getting laser everywhere. Best thing I've ever spent on, honestly.

My only advice that I haven't seen here yet is to make sure you pull the area you're waxing taut, or you can get bruises. Also I agree with others that sugaring is the way to go.

I shave with a good razor and very rarely get any bumps.

Make sure to exfoliate regularly, either using a mechanical(like a loofah or grounded coffee) or chemical (AHA/BHA acids) scrub and hydrate properly. Drink your water and use body lotion every day. I personally use both a loofah and a BHA body lotion in the evenings, then a regular, hydrating body lotion in the mornings.

Managing a brazilian wax, especially with no prior experience is going to be a tough business. First time I tried it, it took me a couple of hours just for the area alone and it was exceptionally painful. Having it done by a professional does hurt kind of the same, but at least it's over much much sooner. Also, maybe look into sugaring, as the pain is greatly reduced. I'm usually done in 10 minutes tops and there's only two areas that really hurt, my labias, which take less than a minute to get done.

My body hair is somewhat thick and unfortunately I used to get all kinds of ingrown hairs when waxing myself and slack off my exfoliating routine, however now I have switched to sugaring for the most sensitive areas (lady bits and thighs) and my skin improved tremendously. I still get the odd bump, but nowhere near like I used to before.

Also, some professionals have advised me to shave at least once between two waxes and that also helps, since shaving also counts as exfoliation. When shaving, I always make sure to use a new razor and shaving foam (Nivea for sensitive skin is really magic).

Something else that helps but is not doable for everybody is limiting the time your skin is compressed, like when you sit down (for the back of the thighs) or wear tight pants/jeans or stockings. I work in an office sitting on a chair 9 hours a day and I cannot change that but I make sure to be extra careful with my clothes at home and always wear shorts when working out.

Exfoliation with both waxing and sugaring is very important to avoid ingrown hairs. Exfoliate the area 3 days prior to waxing to prevent the occurrence of ingrown hairs.b Before waxing take a warm shower or bath before to soften and clean the skin.

After waxing remove wax residues with oil. This will also nourish and soften the skin, then shower or wash off oil residue with water so that your pores will not become clogged as they will be totally open after being freshly waxed. Eliminate stray hairs with disinfected tweezers. Do not re-do the waxing procedure less than 10 days after you initially did it. Avoid Saunas, baths, and solariums for 48 hours. Avoid excessive sun exposure in the area that has been waxed.

I wax my own vagina with wax strips, it's not that hard. It's gonna sting the first time but it's so much better than shaving.
