Congratulations!!!!!

My husband and I eloped. We'd been together and lived together for about 5 years at the time and being married (to him) was more important to me than getting married. That said, we still kept a lot of the trappings. Elopements are a surprisingly (or maybe not) big business if you allow it. We took four friends with us up to a B&B and had a small ceremony (performed by one of said friends) and went to dinner.

If you haven't (and are able), get a new dress and maybe flowers. Get your hair done. It deserves the same 'extras' that you'd give yourself for any formal event. I still have my flowers in a shadow box (and in tattoo form but that's not for everyone :-P ). Take pictures if you can. I'm not a picture person (I have to remember to take them of the baby sometimes) but I'm really glad that I have them. Have sex before dinner...after dinner too if you aren't full of food and wine but make sure you get it in there.

Warnings: be prepared for someone to be upset. I hope for you that this isn't the case. My parents were obviously upset but so was a friend who felt offended that she wasn't told beforehand. I thought getting married was just something for me and my husband -- apparently everyone does not view it this way.

Sometimes I feel a little sadness over the aspects of a wedding I missed out on. My dad will never walk me down the aisle and I can't change that. I was never a girl who looked forward to my wedding, so these feelings caught me off guard a bit. Feel solid in your reasons for choosing the nontraditional path because you may need to recall them in the future when you think about what you might have missed.

I will never regret that I didn't spend a year and a ton of money planning a wedding.

As usual, u/girlwithabike has great advice. The wedding subs might have some helpful tips about how to make an elopement feel more special to you.

My parents had a very simple courthouse wedding with just the two of them back in the day, and I think that's the route SO and I are going to go. My mom's tips were to treat yourself to a new outfit (Amazon has some great dresses, if you're on a budget), make sure to get pictures, and have a nice event for just you two to celebrate, if that's possible. They went on a weekend trip to a nice hotel with a honeymoon suite.

I think taking the time to be a bit more intentional about it might help you feel like it's more special, if that makes sense.

Congratulations. I can't recommend this route enough. I have our 'elopement' pictures taped to my main monitor at work, and they always make me smile.

Congratulations! I second the new dress and flowers! Those were the only two things I was excited about for my own wedding - which was way bigger than I wanted it to be. My husband insisted on inviting everyone though. I still get compliments from that day on my greenery and flowers, but getting a cute bouquet for the day will make it even more special - and you can save it for a memento. I also splurged on a photographer, but only for my husband and I. I will cherish the photos we had taken that day, but I don't share them on social media, because they are for my husband and me.

I also agree with u/girlwithabike in that some people will be upset. A "wedding" celebration is for the family and your loved ones, but you are celebrating a marriage, and that is just between you two. For instance, I knew when planning my wedding that it wasn't just about me, because my family members all had this idea in their head of what the day would look like. I still stuck my ground and planned everything the way I wanted to, but ultimately the party was for "them". I made sure our ceremony was extra special because it was just about my husband and me.

Congrats again and relish in the fact of the thousands of dollars you are saving and can one day put towards investments, travel, a house, or children!

Congratulations! My husband and I eloped and our 10th anniversary is next week. I’m so glad we didn’t spend 20 grand on a party, haha.

Congrats!!! We eloped too this past June and all I brought with me was a second-hand designer dress of my dreams from preownedweddingdresses.com and hired a hair and makeup person and a photographer. Be sure to invest in a nice dress and photographer! You will want those pictures for the rest of your happy lives together! Have fun!

I had to look up what eloping means. I'm sceptical about it...

Does your friends and family know your boyfriend and vice versa? For how long do you know each other?
