Exposure, risk taking (particularly social risk - putting yourself out there).

Start with small tasks and build up consistently over time.

Don't take things personally unless they're actually personal attacks. Most people are too concerned with themselves to actually be relevant to your life or state of mind. Chances are you're overthinking situations.

Slow down and think before responding or taking action. Don't rush yourself and if someone is rushing you, consider that as rude on their part and nothing wrong with yourself. Act accordingly.

Exercise. Lift weights, run, take up a sport or physical activity.

Meditate daily.

Do not take drugs for it.

Agreed, I'm terrible for rushing in with a response in a bid to keep the conversation going at all costs, usually meaning I end up talking all over them. I can feel me doing it and hate it.

I get pretty anxious just trying to think of things to say. Are there any tricks to help get the mouth moving at all? I tend to get 'stuck' and then I have rely on the other person to keep the convo going which leads to awkward silences...

Think about what you are doing as an experiment where there is no attachment to individual outcomes. Keep track of outcomes though and adjust until you usually receive the outcome which you desire.

I used to have crippling anxiety, so bad, but now you would not see it in the slightest

The honest thing which helped me, some really needy, batshit insane girl who would yell at me everyday then apologise after and explain that she had stuff going on-(we were actually really good friends) eventually I learned not to care about the little things and my balls out arrogance shone through in the end. I was also really sensitive, if someone didn't talk to me much, I would stop talking to them altogether thinking they hated me and couldn't stand my company-now I just assume they're either messed up themselves or having a bad day. I was fucked up.

Funny thing is she hates me now...

What kind of anxiety? I had a year of debilitating health anxiety and now I'm fine, let me know if I can help

Real quick comment (or not); sometimes we are so stuck in our heads and think we are the center of the universe. We are not and most of the time our frame of reference and mindset isn't what the other person is thinking at all. We are our own worst critic and as stated earlier, most of the time people won't realize anything weird/off about anything you have done. Most of these people you see won't remember you in a second so who cares? I remember when I was in high school I embarrassed myself in front of tons of students by tripping and falling really bad while running. That lesson taught me that life goes on, yeah it was funny at the time and embarrassing but people have a short memory unless it's something that has really impacted their lives (we are selfish by nature and whether we act on that or not is up to us). Be fearless and press on and I realize its easier said than done but we have to work our mental muscle just like hitting the gym. Spiritual, physical, and mental.

For my tuppence.

1) Focus on having fun rather than projecting a false persona.

2) Warm up by talking to people before social interactions.

3) Drink green tea (google: theanine), don't eat as much sugar or drink as much coffee. Certainly don't use alcohol or drugs as a crutch.

4) Really try to get a grip on the idea of outcome independence. A visualisation of the worst possible scenario and how absurd that result would be is a good warm up.

5) Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law.

Hope this helps. Good advice from the others as well.

I had clinical anxiety for a couple of years. You have to realise that most of the time you bring it upon yourself. Thinking about it brings on anxiety attacks. So try to keep your mind off it. I did this by trying out meditation, picking up new hobbies (reading etc) and even smoking marijuana recreationally. Work up on your social skills step by step and eventually you wont worry about social situations, don't take everything so seriously and don't overthink things. My 2 cents.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm in my 40s and have suffered from social anxiety for years. Whilst I'm not totally over it I'm a lot better than I was in my 20s. You really really have to get out and be social and not avoid these situations. Easier said than done, I know, but it's only because people from my workplace have virtually dragged me out on an evening that I'm getting somewhere.

Start out small, go for a coffee somewhere, edge out of your comfort zone and do something you wouldn't normally do, even if it's just turning up and leaving. Try really hard to suppress the urge to avoid social situations.

If you do get a date and, in true TRP fashion, have to be the man, rehearse. Find somewhere you can go and do a reccie, have a look and just get a feel for the place. The second time you get there it'll so much easier and that extra bit of confidence will be noticed.

Above all edge out of your comfort zone, suppress avoiding things. It's difficult, it will be painful at first but you WILL be glad you made the effort. I couldn't even go into a pub 10 years ago, let alone buy a drink in one.

Theanine definitely helps for this if you're not against nootropics.

Also, there's a difference being a bitch and using drugs as a cop-out vs truly having an anxiety disorder (only problem is that this pussy ass modern age tries to shove drugs down everyone's throats). Only you'll be able to truly make this judgment call, but I wouldn't totally close yourself off to the possibility of drugs.

If you're an adult (21+) with life-long issues and haven't considered psychological/psychiatric help, I'd definitely look into those avenues. Just don't be afraid to get a second opinion.

I don't have clinical anxiety, but I deal with anxiety by just dealing with it. Realize being anxious solves nothing.

Long term: regular exercise, enough sleep, healthy food and vitamins, lifestyle changes, cognitive behavioural therapy

Short term: pharmacological, but dont get hooked

[–]afcpoop 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I posted this in a depression thread, but the concepts are the same. It's all about your diet and state of mind. Nothing else.

YOUR DIET and YOUR WILLPOWER.

YOUR DIET: Too much acidic food will turn you into an anxiety factory. When you start feeling fucked up, you should get some alkaline foods in your body. Wheatgrass and barley juice helps a lot with this. ALSO vitimin B, and D3 are god tier for the good feeling stuff you need. This will destroy all the depression " feelings". It's TOTALLY RELATED TO WHAT YOU PUT IN YOUR BODY.

YOUR WILLPOWER: It fucking sucks I know, but once you get the shitty feelings out by using the dietary tips I gave, you need to fucking SNAP OUT OF IT. It's like trying to wake up from a nightmare. You just gotta flex that muscle and be like STOP BEING DEPRESSED. All this feel good bullshit won't help you. It's literally your pussy little ass finding comfort in these feelings. Just fucking stop. Easier said than done, but it's what you gotta do. It's about mentally being strong. If you got the physical stuff out of the way (using the diet tips I shared) than the mind thing stuff is just training. Just be strong and pull through it.

Coffee and anything else that increases dopamine activity is bad for your anxiety levels.

White, black or green tea and anything that increases GABA activity will be good for your anxiety levels.

Not TRP but just general advice. I had bad social anxiety and mostly beat it.

Therapy solved a lot of it. Dr Drew claims most of therapy is sitting down with someone, learning to communicate safely, openly, and comfortably, and then taking that out of therapy into your other relationships.

Doing things has a waterfall effect. When I finally got up the nerve to take an international trip, I found it tons easier to talk to people for months, as I had interesting things to talk about. It's when I do nothing that I then sit around quietly in groups going "I've got nothing interesting to say".

/r/socialanxiety is helpful and supportive and has good ideas.

Ok, question for OP.

Are you on any sort of medication for ADHD / ADD ?

[–]BlackTarnishWatchman 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feel the fear and do it anyway.

[–]theredpull 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Hey OP, I can relate as I suffered from social anxiety. Just to be clear, if you have social anxiety you can't effectively apply red pill concepts infact, by doing so you may just end up making things worse. Social anxiety is a shitty haze that uses up your mental resources and keeps you in a haze so you can't function properly socially.

But listen, I'm going to give you EXACTLY what your looking for and in around 4-6 months your anxiety will deteriorate, I'm talking from experience.

You need to download or buy a course called "overcoming social anxiety step by step" by Dr Richards. Its an intensive CBT program that will completely sort you out.

If you prefer torrenting it, get it from here: http://bayproxy.me/torrent/3437180/Overcoming_Social_Anxiety-Social_Phobia

Anxiety issues are half physical. Start (or increase) your exercise program and eat right. Get some sunlight.

As for the mindset half of it, the other comments have some good points.

Theanine works (get the pills AND drink green tea instead of coffee).

Xanax is a guaranteed solution to situational anxiety, get some from your doctor

you certainly don't have any experience or knowledge of the topic, please refrain from commenting and giving bad advice.

[–]TRP VanguardVZPurp 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You're the only person giving bad advice. Demonstrate some knowledge about pharmacology or get the fuck out when it comes to drugs.

[–]TRP VanguardVZPurp 3 points4 points5 points 12 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Absolutely do not take benzodiazepines!

Jesus fucking christ. The worst solution to anxiety is the horribly addictive one.

[–]frogmallet -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

yea god forbid we do something that is "horribly addictive", better stick to smoking and alcohol

[–]TRP VanguardVZPurp 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Got a xanax habit?

[–]frogmallet -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

ever take Xanax for anxiety? no, of course not, you get all your information from wikipedia.

[–]TRP VanguardVZPurp 1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I must have hit close to home. Best of luck ;)
