I have a question or problem with this concept.

When I approach a girl, I have a couple of requirements that I want to know if she checks off. I need to find her physically attractiv and I want her to be an active, interested and interesting in our conversation. What that means is she should be into talking to me, have interesting, intelligent and witty things to say and be likable. Those are my first 2 checkmarks. If the girl meets them then I am interested in going out on a date. And once that happens I just ask them out. Whether it is direct in saying "I like/am attracted to you let's go out" or something less in your face "Want to do X?"

The problem is 2 things: 1 when I do that there tends to be a shift in the way the woman acts. Most commonly they tend to avoid the offer/question. If not that, it's generally a no or a yes that never happens. I have no idea why this happens, but it seems to change the how they look at me. Often they stop talking to me all together. 2 is that there is nothing that I am doing that in challenging. I just treat them like as if I were talking to a dude or anyone really and then once I've established interest I try to escalate to a date. I add in nothing to play hard to get or anything of the sort. I almost view it as beneath me and trying too hard. So my question with this is; Is it necessary to deliberately and, imo, arbitrarily add in things to the interaction that make one seem like a challenge in order for girls to respond?
