Will natural biology affect people (hormones, periods, etc.)? Yes.

Some idiots believe that the answer is no. Once you take those idiots outside of the picture, what you're really dealing with is:

Will natural biology lead to a negative outcome for X group of people.

Will her cycle affect her? Yes. The question is if it will negatively impact X or Y.

If the time of day can affect a parole judge's decision making, then I'm quite sure that time of the month can affect a woman's judgement.

Outstanding question.

My 2 cents. Those women in power tend to be older because they have more experience working in their field and hence they rise up to higher management positions. Obviously the same with men, mostly. Im in my early 20s, I shouldnt expect to be in senior management anytime soon, the same goes for women.

Women who are still mensturating and are in a position of power could have, perhaps, more impulsivity, prone to anger (PMSing), etc. However, you should keep in mind that many women are also on birth control pills which keeps their estrogen/lutenizing/FSH hormones at a steady rate. You would have to compare both groups of women. Combine this fact with the fact that many women base their decisions on emotions and you might never find what youre looking for.

Edit: also in terms of male and female judges - you have to work your way up. Law school, lawyer, then judge. So you'll see many older male and female judges. So again, more experience, and if the female judge is post-menopausal, then not much fluctuating hormones.

On that same note your blood sugar levels can also have impact on your emotions and probably to a greater degree than your sex hormones.

Short answer: Yes.

In the military, we had a joke about the horrors of having a female commander, and why a male should transfer to a combat arms unit (Preferably a Victor unit) ASAP. It was that your career depended on whether or not you can identify your commanding officer's menstral cycle, and be able to lay low while she's at the peak of it. The punchline to the joke was that, like clockwork, every month, there would be a sudden increase of Non-Judicial Punishment hearings, counselings, black marks on records, and general career-fucking things, especially for men.

Thank God I got stuck in infantry units my whole time in.

My LTR goes completely off her rocker for about 4 days of the month.

I mean, it's like she's stoned in an aggressive way. She identifies as just 'being crazy'. Makes illogical choices, fucks up very simple things - takes hostile offense at perfectly ok things people say to her. She's even aware all this happens - I never let her get away with bullshit.

She just tried really hard to keep her mouth shut and her head down.

For those 4 days though - absolutely it would affect her decision making, and she's in a professional job. Depending on where those 4 days land that represents 18.5% of her working month. [4.3 weeks in month turned to days minus (2 days off x 4.3 weeks in month) over days insane].

It's kinda scary.

Read Baumeister's "Willpower". Well, read Baumeister's everything, he's brilliant, but anyways, decision making depends a lot on something called "ego depletion", which is more or less related to glucose levels in the brain.

Sounds abstract? How about this: parole boards are 10 times more likely to grant parole if the hearing is after lunch then before. With low glucose levels willpower is weaker, and mind tends to revert to the safe, or default choice - keep in prison.

So yeah, menstruation probably affects decision making, but I'd bet is lost in the noise compared to how biochemistry affects both sexes.

Women are more connected to their emotional side than men are (their brain's connections are horizontal in nature) and thus they make more decisions based on emotion than logic.

Hormonal changes only enhance this effect. How much? Well it depends how angry she is (rise in adrenaline and thus creates a mix of hormones).

Imaging studies show that women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (severe PMS) have abnormal dorsolateral prefrontal cortex activation, an important area of the brain for planning and working memory.

Another trial in the NEJM showed that ovarian suppression during menstruation led to a decrease in symptoms (anxiety, impaired function, sadness, irritability food cravings etc), basically saying that the symptoms experienced result from an abnormal response to normal hormonal changes.

Lastly another study found that women experiencing PMS had lower levels of anti-anxiety related metaboloties which could then contribute to the symptoms of anxiety, tension and depression, which are all associated with changes in decision making.

I'm sure there is more research out there, but these are a few of the interesting studies I found.
