BE MOTHERFUCKING HAPPY. Enjoy life's pleasures. Enjoy women for the imperfect mostly hairless little monkeys they are. Fall in love, have orgies, do whatever you think you might enjoy. As long as you don't neglect your long term developent or sacrifice your identity, you can do no wrong.

You are so right. The way I see it, maximizing your happiness is the end goal of long term development. The only way to know what actually makes you happy is to try whatever you think might be fun and see how it makes you feel. Feels good, put that in the long term playbook. Feels bad, move on and try a new experience.

You literally have nothing to lose outside of that discomfort and some awkwardness

This is why I accept every social interaction possible.

Hell last night I went to see the new X-men movie with a guy from work. We didn't talk much, but it was fun. Tonight I might be going to a bonfire and meet people I've never seen before. It's thrilling.

It's so weird, people ask all the time about faking being social, or forcing yourself to do it. Once you do, you get addicted to talking and meeting people. Lots of fun to be had.

[–]VirgoRooster 5 points5 points5 points 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

See, I'm on the other side of the spectrum. I worry less about meeting new people since I've been RP. I used to think I had to put on an act to please people, but more and more, I just don't give a shit.

Now, I'd rather go snorkeling or hiking on my lonesome or with my dog than hang out with boring, superficial people.

It really is what you make it.

Oh yea believe me the introverted side of me will always be there. I went through a phase where I hated everyone and thought less of most people, for example, if a guy only ever talked about nascar, I would think he was an idiot redneck hick

Now I just want to talk to the guy about nascar.

Edit: You just end up enjoying people for who they are.

Can confirm this; heck just last friday I hit up some bars alone after going out on a successful first date with a girl. It was a great time. Met quite a few people, drank amazing craft beers, and hell, by the end of the night people were buying me drinks!

Never be afraid to try things out by yourself. In fact, if it frightens you go do it, you will grow from that experience and you may just enjoy it!

Yea, but I'm learning to become outcome independent. It so happens the guy cancelled, so I don't care either way. Normally I'd give a shit, but now I simply don't. Instead I went for a 45min bike ride and read some Carnegie.

Solid post, OP.

You've done a great job of summarizing a portion of TRP: accepting responsibility for your own well-being (or agency, which has become a popular term here as of late).

Western society has done a fantastic job of breeding people who are always seeking to be victims, who are always in need of "help," and who feel that they are entitled to these services.

In our society today, a victim is generally a victim because he chooses to be. And what a pitiful place to find yourself in.

I don't mean to say that you choose to be robbed, or raped, or beaten, or taken advantage of. Those are true victims. But a person who sits inside and throws pity-parties ("woe-is-me" style) do so of their own volition, and to their own unhappiness.

An introvert can overcome that, those with social anxiety can overcome it (with and without medication), those claiming "there are no good women" can look harder, those who are "bored" can find hobbies.

But relishing your own pity will not do this for you.

First - allow yourself to be happy. Too many of us hold onto this notion that we shouldn't be happy. That we can't be happy - like it's not allowed.

Dispel this thinking. We are made to be happy. Allow trivial things to bring a smile to your face. Happiness in our privileged world is largely a choice (barring rare exceptions). Allow yourself to be happy; train yourself to be happy. In many cases, it can be just that simple.

Men must not seek to be victims. Our biology does not allow it. Testosterone drives us to be bigger, better, stronger, in control, and motivated. To play the victim card to avoid your life is to swim against the current - it's a battle you will not win. Going against your natural drives by claiming to be a victim is a sure road to unhappiness, and being unfulfilled as a man.

The sure-fire way I have found to solve this in myself is desire whatever it is that is disturbing me.

"I don't want to go out - I'm too shy."
I WANT to be shy. I WANT this to be a challenge. I WANT to have something to overcome, so I feel satisfied when I've won.

"I'm heartbroken because she left me." I WANT this pain. I WANT to know that I felt something - this is what makes me a human. I WANT to know that this meant something, so that I will be better for it once I have overcome it.

"I hate my job and my life." I NEED to hate my job. I NEED to hate my life. These emotions are driving me to be better - they are driving me forward and motivating me to become a better person. If I had a job I loved, I would become complacent. If I had a perfect life, I would lose my motivation to seek better.

Embrace your problems. They define you. They drive you. They mold you.

There was once a Reddit thread where people published quotes that motivated them.

One rugby player, /u/strengthof10interns wrote "Hate you life." If I recall correctly, he learned this from his rugby coach, or teammates. It was used when teammates didn't want to practice or train. They would tell each other "hate your life." It was by hating what they were going through that they were driven to overcome it.

You don't want to go to the gym? You're going anyway. Hate your life. You don't want to talk to that girl because she'll reject you? You're going to talk to her anyway, and get rejected. Hate your life. You don't want to attend a party because you don't know anyone? You're going anyway. Hate your life.

We are men. We must fight so that others can live easily. We must be fight because we are capable of bearing the burden.

That said, I will leave you with some quotations that touch on this topic:

"You cannot find peace by avoiding life." -Virginia Woolf

"The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

"The brave may not live forever, but the cautious don't live at all." -Meg Cabot

"It is my good luck that, although this has happened to me, I can bear it....Such a thing could have happened to any man, but not every man could bear it without pain." -Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

"No more wandering. .... Abandon vain hopes and rescue yourself while the opportunity is still there." -Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

"Retain your independence of outside help and the peace which others can give. Your duty is the stand straight - not be held straight." -Marcus Aurelius, Meditations

Overcome.

I don't want to contradict a rugby player, but I think his idea could be express better this wasy:

Don't be comfortable, if your comfortable you are not growing, if you are not growing you are only dying.

This is exactly what is being said in the book I'm currently reading: The War of Art. The author talks about this thing we all have, Resistance, which keeps us from achieving great things and ultimately happiness.

Overcoming Resistance becomes harder and harder the more rewarding a task may be, such as works of art, tough degrees, or personal battles.

I had my moment where it all clicked just a week ago and this describes it perfectly.

[–]elokr 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Motherfucker, let him work out his problems on his own, his decisions, his consequences, the only thing you can do is live a great life and let him see the difference.

That's the only way to do it.

Part of self-actualisation is personality development, we're all on a journey, mods and endorsed contributors are no exception from that, I'd hazard a guess that despite differing stages of development, not very many of us have truly actualised who they want to be yet.

You are never done, when you're done you are just a dead man that can think.

If you don't allow yourself to be a happy unless you reach a certain goal, the only thing that you have is that goal, you neglect the rest. You will be highly motivated of course and reach that goal and then be happy, for a second. Then you search for something else, another second of satisfaction. You end up in the same behavioral pattern as a beta guy that justifies a relationship because of those 2 to 3 special nights every year.

Fundamentally you win at life by enjoying it, if you forget that, all the rest is pointless. Power, pleasure, status are projections we try to reach and win with, but if we become obsessed with the projection and neglect the process you are unfair. We look at the future, at a arbitrary goal and we fail to realise we currently reached another arbitrary point, which is just as valuable because it represents our best ever form.

I am arguing that once you are committed to continous improvement(and actually act acordingly), you loose the right to be unhappy. You are ungrateful if you don't give yourself credit for every day of your progress. And in that process you realised you made it, not because you reached a certain goal, but because you live a satisfactory life on your own terms, according to your own values, toward you own goals, which is more than any of us could reasonably want.

After that realisation, how can one go on the internet and complain about some shit that happend in the past that basicaly lead up to his current life?

[–]gwankovera 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

One thing I see a lot of people doing is looking at happiness as the goal, so when they reach the goal they feel a brief bit of happiness before getting a new goal and then losing the happy feeling they had. I like the idea of having the happiness join me on the journey to my goal.

[–]asd1100 2 points3 points4 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Enjoying the process should be the "goal". In fact the goal should be cold and analytical: continuous improvement, full stop. And that can be done while entertaining anger, self-pity and angst or the right way, enjoying the process, taking into account every marginally good thing that happens and disregarding the bad things as ephemeral and without consequence.

BE MOTHERFUCKING HAPPY.

This advice sucks, because emotions are not controllable as you would like them to be. Go to a guy with clinical depression and tell him to be motherfucking happy. See how it works. Should have done it for Elliot R. I am starting to think that drugs are the answer, mkay. Xanax, weed, whatever.

Second thought: destructive emotions are the main problem in our life and in the area of sexual strategy. Approach anxiety, laziness, procrastination, result orientation, neediness, etc.

But but, this exception to a generalization exists!
