Had some trouble digesting a TRP concept. Now that I swallowed the pill I'm struggling on how to put it in action.

There's a few books I could suggest but above all I'd suggest you read How To Win Friends and Influence People by Andrew Carnegie followed by 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene. I'd say digest this material, take it seriously, study it, etc. Start appealing to your bosses interests. Your interests don't matter in the least bit to him. Talk to him about what HE likes. Everybody is vein. By appealing to his own ego and sense of self you're likely to make a lot further a lot quicker. The key is to find one topic which you can strongly connect with. Have you been snowboarding your entire life growing up and does he or his children also snowboard? Is he into sports? Video games? Beer? Bbq? You get the idea.

I work in IT, which is a goldmine for anti-social shut-ins.

You need to differentiate yourself. Put yourself on people's radars. If you're a programmer, spend some time every day shooting the shit with colleagues when you need a mental refresher. Talk to your leads, your designers, your QA guys. Just a little banter, could be about work, small-talk about life, whatever.

If you're a Help Desk worker, socialize the shit out of the people requesting help. I work with law firms, I can't tell you how many guys working the desk simply keep their heads down and silently fix issues and expect themselves to be noticed by upper management. If you get noticed by the people who run the place you put yourself in a position to benefit from their clout. At the very least you can get yourself a commendation before you leave for greener pastures.

I work as a consultant. Socializing with clients is 10x more important than technical skills (though those are also necessary). Number #1 truism about clients -- sooner or later you will deal with some fucktard. Doesn't matter. Game him just like a bitchy woman, hold frame, assume the position of authority. Despite what most people bitching about it say, you can win over shitty clients.

It sounds like you just need practice getting out of your introverted shell. Practice with the small-talk, it's a lifelong skill.

I was in your position 10 years ago. some thoughts..

1) Get stuff done, minimal time, minimal effort. If you have to spend a lot of time on it, is the reward worth it? Is it a time sink? find a way around it.

2) Focus on Big things. Nobody cares (let alone knows) if you have the perfectly organized email inbox. Did you get that assignment done today? early? - better yet!

3) A hard worker is rarely promoted, that would be stupid! let them stay and pull the wagon until they die; is Mgmt thinking.

4) Promote/Advertise yourself. Don't lie, but brag when you get the chance, no one else will do it for you. again, keep it to big things (I found the bug that saved us 3 weeks, or my weekend effort kept us on target for delivery).

5) Help your allies. Nothing beats a team of "I help you, you help me" efforts.

6) Smile and have fun. Even if you have to fake it. Management likes to be stroked. think like a prostitute, it's a means to an end. financial freedom.

You just need practice. However, do not practice at work, you only have one chance to do it right there.

Put yourself in non-work-related social situations and build up your social skills.

After a while you will feel more competent socially; then apply what you learned to the people and bosses at work.

If your work involves sitting in front of a screen all day knocking out code or important powerpoints, then just this on its own will rob you of the natural ability to connect with people.

Funny as it sounds, one good cure for it is to commit yourself to regular "total immersion experiences" in nature settings. Doesn't matter what it is, rock climbing, scenic trail biking, paragliding, surfing, just going to a forest hugging a fat pine and reciting poems for an hour or two. Whatever you want, involving you spending time in the middle of the ebb and flow of nature.

Must be done chronically with almost religious fervor so you can refill your chronically depleted reserves.

I've always believed the mind adheres to the same principals as the body. Exercise is the best way to improve it.

If you wanted to learn a new physical skill, you'd study what it involves and begin a workout/practice routine starting small and working up from there. Mental skills follow the same rule. The more you put into it the more and faster you'll develop. I'd suggest a program with some form of daily practice (doesn't have to be the same thing every day) with a once a week "game." Game being where you take an hour go out and put it into practice.

Moving on....

The workplace today is not what it was to our grandparents. Back in the day, keeping your head down, not making waves, and doing good work was enough. You're right, now, that's not enough. Now, you have to play politics.

I had a boss once that had few to no technical skills in our industry (which, as it happens, was IT), but that fucker had a golden tongue. That's why he was in charge. Unless you're that good, no, there's a good chance you'll never make management. That's not to say you can't move up. You don't need to be a kiss-ass, but you do need to be socially available. Company bbq? You're going. Some boys from the office going to beer after work on friday? Cancel your date night.

The only caveats are the same that a successful bartender goes by: don't express any potentially controversial opinions, and avoid talking about sports, politics, or religion. Also, I'll also give a bump to Dale Carnegie. Not as specific or all-encompassing as 48 Laws, but a helluva lot shorter and easier to digest and put into action.
