Everything here was supposed to disappear. Banned subreddits, deleted communities, cancelled blogs — much of what is archived here survives nowhere else.

It stays free — no paywall, no account — for the next man who comes looking, the way it was free for you.

This might go some ways to explaining the poor reviews it's receiving. Publishing is now a female dominated industry.

mmm, I see it as more of an expectation that readers want their feels catered to. These days, what sells is the ideal that there is such a thing as a standard, and that standard is good, and the good wins over evil in the end. Atticus represented the height of masculinity and unwavering goodness.

Go Set a Watchman paints a more realistic, more complex scenario that forces the reader to look inside and understand the inherent hypocrisies and complexities of all of us. And like a child who for the first time realizes that one's parents are not perfect, so is our experience in reading Go Set a Watchman.

tldr; truth is painful. Easier to believe in convenient lies.

I'm more intrigued to read it now.

Very solid description of easily the biggest theme in the book.

I think there might be a correlation there as well, it's honestly a pretty good read.

I haven't read her new book but Atticus Finch in TKaM is probably my ideal of masculinity. Unfortunately his kind of unwavering loyalty to an abstract morality is of a bygone era (also fictional). I think Finch would be a depressed and lonely man in real-world 2015, a bitterly disappointed idealist.

I'd have to disagree. Understanding that we're talking about fictional characters here, I'd like to believe that Atticus would still be very successful as a man and would still be able to uphold his moral character even in times like ours. He's first and foremost a stoic, in Go Set a Watchman there's almost a whole chapter devoted to detailing his behavior as a man, lawyer and father and everything screams stoicism.

He's a master of frame, of good intellect, and has a moral compass that is strong albeit it's one that can be limited by the social norms of his time.

I think he'd still be the same man, just the 2015 version. I can understand the argument behind that potentially being a lesser version however.

He'd certainly need a more relaxed and pragmatic approach to morality to achieve anything.

Harper Lee comes from a better time. A time before the progressive feminsit bullshit we have now.

What was the quote? It's been deleted.
