you don't have a nickname (or short form of your name)? most kids with non-native names seem to have one
just pick one
like steve
you're steve now
[–]RedDesire points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
The name I have is already as short as it can be. Should I really go with an Anglo Saxon name when it's clear to a girl that I'm not really one?

It's cool Steve. It will also help with job applications after college. Just add it to the front, keep all your other names. Then you can do business as Steve Whatever, and no one will care.

I'd go with Steve-O to really push the party animal angle
[–]rocacu8 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Steve is a cool name bro, sounds like a party animal.

Westernize your current name. If Ali be Al. If Mohammad be Mo. If Hamad be Ham.
Or pick one of those cool Arab names like Khaled or whatever Amir.
Honestly, if your name is not Hussein or Whatever, you should be fine.

I know of a man in a very high position of power - in the United States, no less - with the middle name "Hussein".
The man makes the name, not the other way around.
I mean his first name is Barrack and he's married. Not to mention, he already has lots of criticism when it comes to his name and origins. Also, I think being the first black president helps out a bit too for people to over look it.

Steve, you're overthinking things.
[–]Fredo1008 points9 points10 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
If you're high value, they won't give a fuck about your name.

International students, most commonly Chinese, will use an English name when learning the language and continue using that name in America. It makes it easier for everyone. Ive had asian coworkers make up a new name on the spot and no one has a problem with using it. It's up to you, but it's not an uncommon thing to have an English name.
Yeah, should I just act like that's my name or let them know that it's a nickname?
Act like it's your name, and if they ask then say it's a nickname and that your real name is X, but you can call me Y.
[–]ScienceDenial0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
But then that name wouldn't be real simply because of your fallacy.
Affirming the consequent frames you as a tactless dolt.

True. I once saw a taiwanese girl who was named yasygsidubwiubdwibdl or something or other. She went by Jasmine, one of the better plates ever had, which awesomely enough predates theRP

I've always thought that my name makes me sound like a 12 year old boy who wears DC skate shoes with long socks and a Monster Energy shirt.
I agree with the other guy, maybe use a nickname. It could even be beneficial to use your current name and then when women have a negative response, just demonstrate your rock solid frame and maybe even exaggerate it.

I'm experienced with this, I'm Arab, I changed my name to my username, Yes, that is my real name.
You will get alot more job application success and it sounds cool as fuck and people will tell you it does.
Wow, really? How did that go with people who knew your original name? Also, what do people say when they hear it and then find out your ethnicity?

How did that go with people who knew your original name?
I don't speak to them anymore, I moved city, My mum knows but she calls me my birth name and i don't mind.
what do people say when they hear it and then find out your ethnicity?
It's either
Wow, cool name
That's not really your name is it? Then i whip out my driving silence then woah, that's cool as shit
then usually oh so what are you ethnically?
then i say black & arab and that's the end of it.
If you were Indian you'd have problems.

Get a nickname. It's not uncommon at all to not use your birth name.
How do I just start using it though? Do I just declare it to everyone I know to start calling me that? How will I know they will take me seriously? Or you mean only when talking to girls?

I've always gone by a nickname. It was easy when moving. I go by my initials now.
I'm not sure how you do it within your current social group.
Even in my social group we have Nicknames for each other. Not really endearing ones - usually just play on our names. But if you start giving nicknames to your friends maybe they'll give you one that isn't so shitty.
You can do it with just girls if you want. I'd go with initials still unless that comes off odd, then good luck.
Muhammad J - start introducing yourself as MJ. Fuck it even if your middle name isn't J, but let's say you play basketball you are now Muhammad Jordan.
Or for example my Mexican friend Jorge tells white people his name is George.

Now, I feel this already gives me a disadvantage
Give yourself a cool nickname if it bothers you that much.

Pick a name, start using it, move on. Guaranteed this is not the problem. You've got some inner game issues to work through.

How do you expect people to give you respect when you won't even put some respect on your own name?
