I love the final point in the article. He didn't find her, she found him, and it was by searching for men over 6' with blue eyes.

There is no point in online dating, besides having fun. Last I heard the 'success' rate was 0.3%. Where success is defined by a relationship lasting only 6 months (EG not even long term).

He's a genius. But a beta genius. 87 dates with no second base? He may be a great mathematician but his statistics in real life dating suck.

Dude you don't know how many of those dates turned out to be MySpace angles. 90 percent could be mutts.

I have been using ok Cupid since its been out. The algorithms are gone to shit. Where my profile used to get views from just browsing other profiles. Now I hardly get any. There are articles on /r/okcupid explaining how your account gets hidden from user's. Small things like if you don't set your age of accepting women at 28 or above you get blocked (mine was set to 18 to 25 for very good reasons).

Now popular girls you have to pay to contact them.

88 seems excessive, but you don't know what you are getting till you go, and women lie quite a lot about age.

He rigged the bots to maximize their compatibility score; doing so obviously causes that score to lose all predictive power. This is not a failing of OKCupid, or proof that their estimate of compatibility is useless.

Not exactly, he rigged the bots to figure out what questions to answer, and then he answered them honestly. This upped the number of people he was found to be compatible with, and then he had the bots view their profile. But he still had trouble, rarely going on second dates, and going through 88 people of supposedly high compatibility before finding someone.

Online dating is entirely abstract. You're dealing with pure information. There's no knowledge of whether you or the person will have chemistry, which has less to do with common interests, or even looks, and more to do with physical chemistry, you know, that thing that makes you choose one hot girl over another?

[–]thro_way 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Rigging how your answers are weighted destroys the utility of their algorithm to the same degree that rigging your answers does. A 99% no longer means that you share similar opinions, which is all it ever meant.

"Chemistry" is a female construction used to rationalize attractions that don't align with their worldview/view of themselves. "I didn't like him because he was <sociopathic trait>, we just happened to have chemistry. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ "

I don't believe for a second that you'd pass up a 10/10 with a conservative background and an Ivy League degree for a more homely girl with whom you had "chemistry". If you would, you shouldn't.

[–]monsieurhire2 4 points5 points6 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

OKCupid as gazillions of questions, many submitted by readers. You could get lost and waste years of your life answering them all. This guy found a way to cut through the shit. In any case, it's all bullshit anyway.

Physical chemistry is real. I've felt absolutely ZERO chemistry with girls who were physically attractive, and had chemistry with meh and fugly (alcohol helped) girls. I have met many a 10/10 who I have managed to feel nothing for. Physical chemistry is what makes you more interested in a 6-8 rather than a 9-10. There's a spark; a connection. If I had a 7-8 that I was happy with, I wouldn't trade her in for a 9-10, even if I felt some chemistry with the 9-10.

I prefer the term satisfaction over chemistry.

[–]xiko 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You didn't connect with them. You might have the connection done easier with some girls instead of others but you can connect with anyone.

I don't think it's worth it. Women lie in their profile like crazy.

Not one if them states, that she's looking for an attractive stranger to have meaningless sex with.

[–]monsieurhire2 -1 points0 points1 point 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He had 99% compatibility with the first batch of dates . . . but there was no physical chemistry! Whoops! Probably could've gotten better, and quicker results approaching random girls he found to be cute. This is why I HATE online dating with a capital H-A-T-E. It's just another man-made labyrinth hapless fools wander into looking for the treasure, similar to the bar-scene.

[–]-Tom 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

To be fair, he said lots of girls were messaging him and he only needed to use one line replies to get a date, and often had two dates per day. His lack of success is probably because he's terrible on dates.

If you could take his system and just leave it running. Then send one sentence, no effort replies to women's messages this would be easier than real life. Just be RP on your date.
