I was wondering if anyone had any similar experiences really

I'll keep it brief

Growing up, I seriously lacked assertiveness, I did not have any real concept of my own needs and ensuring they were addressed, I simply put other people first and let them walk over me. Not just girls, guys, girls, teachers, strangers anyone, looking back it was ridiculous. I wasn't even doing it to get anything in return, since, in reality most of these people probably needed me more than I needed them, I was like the social welfare check of whichever group I was a part of.

Yet back then, I was seen as an asshole, I would try to everything for people, make sure they were happy and people would still say I am lazy, selfish, the slightest slip up would result in me being chastised, ridiculed, I was so miserable and I did internalise this and I did blame myself. I saw myself as the problem.

Fast foward these past 18 months, I have changed, a lot. I am really assertive, not in a jokey way, or a sarcastic way, I will look someone straight in the face and tell them what I want, without a smile or a smirk, anything. "This is what I expect, if you don't like it, you be replaced"

People actually see me as nice...wait wut....Now pretty much everyone around me talks highly of me, sees me as a decent hardworking guy, whenever I do do things to help others, people are incredibly appreciative and nobody ever complains about me or has a bad word to say.

It's as if, we don't get what we deserve, we get what we demand

Anyone else noticed this?

Edit: I've taken a good look at the replies and I really did not expect this level of analysis and I do feel I have gained significant insight into the situation. Given your responses and perhaps two of the most famous examples of ruthless men who are unanimously regarded as the good guys of their respective fields, Pep Guardiola and Steve Jobs, these men have an almost saint-like aura cast around them despite being complete bullies behind the scenes, I think this is a pattern which manifests itself in humanity, an extension of redpill

When I decided to simply man up, I expected huge amounts of resistance given how people treated me before, pretty much everyone caved like a house of cards, I's great knowing I am on the right path, thank you
