Summary

I find flakes so frustrating. Amongst others, it’s one of those aspects of game that’s just there to upset well intentioned men as well as waste their time. In this article I’d like to discuss why they happen and what you can do to reduce them.

Why do flakes happen?

Before finding a bit of a pattern with flakes, they seemed to happen completely randomly. It didn’t matter if I suggested the date or the girl did, if I was decisive about the location and time or if I wasn’t.

I mean how many times have you met a girl out and really hit it off, only to text or call her the next day and not get a response? Deciding not to turn up to a date, or refusing to text a girl back that we had met only the night before, might seem far beyond what any of us would be capable of.

One idea that has really stuck with me though is that a decision a girl makes is highly state dependent. This simply means that if she makes a decision when feeling a particular emotion, often she’ll only stick to it later if she feels the same way.

For example, let’s say you meet a girl at a bar and for the next few hours, continue to escalate to the point that you’re very physical. She’s turned on, but for logistical reasons that you can’t overcome, she isn’t able to come home with you. At this point, you exchange numbers and she enthusiastically agrees to meet you in a few days. When the time comes to meet however, she may not be in that same turned on state that she was when she made the decision to see you and thus flakes.

How to minimalise flakes

I’ve experimented a bit with the best time to propose a meetup as well as what state to get the girl in before doing so. What has historically worked quite well is getting her into the kind of mood that she’d usually be in throughout most of her day i.e. a more chilled, rational mood. If you’re going for the meetup, then she shouldn’t be turned on, feeling adventurous, naughty or overly excited. Sure you might get her to agree to the meetup, even more enthusiastically under those circumstances, but she may also be more likely to flake.

Here’s an example from a recent conversation:

Context: Talking about her work

Her: Just an English teacher

Me: So you usually just work mornings?

Her: Morning at a kindergarten then a few hours on an evening or weekend at a language school.

Me: Busy girl.

Her: You said you usually worked quite late?

Me: Just Monday to Friday, but my hours are pretty flexible.

Her: Perfect!

Me: Perfect?

Her: That your work is so flexible :)

Me: Indeed. Are you free tomorrow?

Her: I’m heading into town to pop to the train station and the embassy if you want to meet for lunch/coffee?

Me: Sounds good let’s meet at the embassy at 1pm.

Her: Yeah sure, do you want to talk on whatsapp? #

Up until this point it’s been very flirty and fun now that the date is being arranged it's formal and otherwise quite boring. But she's now more likely to be in the same mood she'll be in when she wakes up tomorrow and when she's thinking about coming to meet me. It's this kind of dynamic I aim for when arranging dates and it's resulted in fewer flakes.

Lessons Learned

  • Decisions made by women are highly state dependent. You're more likely to get them to stick to their decision if they feel the same way as they did when they made it.
  • Getting a girl interested in a date is still a matter of good game but arranging a date quite formally can result in fewer flakes.

So what are some of the things that you do that have helped to reduce flakes? Any other techniques that have helped?
