My personal view is that if you do that what you loathe, you are no better then that what you hate.

And don't hamster yourself out of this one. A liar is a liar, a cheater a cheater. Men who fuck around but at the same time complain about women being unloyal beings are no better than the hamster they are criticizing. If you pride yourself on honor but then use 'logic' to 'rationalize' (aka, hamstering) your unethical behaviour, you are a hypocrite.

In my book, that's worse than someone who at least has the balls to admit his unethical deeds. Just give it a thought.

As for myself I am a champion of traditional moral values. Some people disagree with me but fuck them. Also dark triad's, I respect you for your alpha nature but cross/threaten me or give me legal or ethical reason and I'll show you my primal side and enforce the code.

Ethics are personal. My ethics are determined based on a risk versus reward analysis with vary few exceptions.

I am probably some level of psychopath.

Like most things, ethical decisions are risk/reward propositions. Cheating on a test, for example. If the reward is better than the risk, I would just assume that most people are doing it. A take-home test that is "closed book," for example. You just assume everybody is open-booking it, and the risk of being caught is quite small.

Lying to my wife is something I wouldn't do unless the risk of her knowing the truth would be worth the effort of covering it up. I'm not even sure what scenario that would be, but there you go.

Selfish isn't always bad, but always being selfish is bad. At a psychopathic minimum, you need to help people enough that they're willing to help you. The Godfather calling in a favor, so to speak. You get the furthest in everything when you have a group of people supporting you, and if you always act selfishly, you just won't have that group.

I like to think of myself as a very ethical person. In fact I hold it up in high regards.

However, things like "cheating" when no one else is effect, is fine by me. For instance. If you haven't studied for a test but have to pass to graduate, go ahead and cheat. No one is going to be harmed if you cheat. In fact, not cheating would put you at a disadvantage because now you'll have to repeat another semester. Go ahead and cheat to get ahead.

Or, taking performance enhancing drugs for aesthetic reasons. Fuck it, go ahead. No one else is affected, and it just gets you to your goal sooner. Why the hell wouldn't you?

But when it comes to things like cheating on women, fucking dudes GFs, and shit like that. Yeah, I don't do that, for the most part. If I don't like the dude, then fuck him, he deserves none of my loyalty.

ethics is a topic that has existed for millenia in philosophy. we arent really breaking any new ground here.

just know that there are different ethical viewpoints which will yield different answers.

I would never perform unethical actions, and I don't associate with those who would. Not only is this for the good of society - only by advancing ethics in our own lives can society become more moral - but it's good for oneself. I look forward to reaching Plato's concept of eudaimonia before my death.

My own satisfaction with myself as a good person isn't worth giving up for a pay raise or anything.

It may sound crazy but I have basically never seen situations in my own life where behaving unethically would have gained an advantage. Lying to get ahead in a career? How? If I claim to have a skill I don't my job will be really difficult. I read a lot of stories about people being all sorts machiavellian, screwing others over for their own benefit but I just don't see these kinds of situations. For example, consider jockeying for a promotion. Do you really want to be a boss of someone who hates you because you snatched it unethically? They will use every possible way to undermine and sabotage you. Your orders will be misinterpreted the worst way possible. You can no longer make the smallest mistake. Totally stressful. Or consider trying to sell a used car while hiding its faults. Do I really want someone who knows where I live to hate me and break my leg or burn down the house? To save what, a months salary? Does it really worth it?

I mean to even consider being unethical, there must be a temptation, there must be a situation that worths it. Let's put it this way. The reward must be a 20% raise or a whole years salary in one go. The risk should be low, nobody who can harm me in any way should be upset. In that case I might be ethical. But it never happened and I cannot really imagine it.

I guess it may sound a bit beta, as in fearful and cowardly. But I think either you take calculated kinds of risks for fun, like in sports, or take real risks if the reward is high. But making some other person hate you and want to harm you for no real reward? It just does not sound smart to me.

(I find it curious that you call cheating on tests unethical. It seems it is a feature of Anglo-American cultures. We (Eastern Europe) have considered it a forbidden yet normal thing like smoking pot: teachers have authority, have power over you, so of course you try to resist it by bending the rules. When teachers caught us they often laughed in a "gotcha!" way then of course wrote in the obligatory F for the test, while the boys generally tried their best "everybody see how brave I am" look.)

There is only one unselfish act: suicide.

All other acts are selfish.

Why suicide? Because now you are no longer consuming resources others might consume.

Some say suicide is selfish because of all the people you hurt. Bullshit. No one really gives a fuck about you anyway. That's the truth of human nature.
