I was thinking the same thing. He seems like he's the one annoyed by the loud watchers of the entertainment to the point of silently ranting to himself at the bar. I understand that some fans can go way overboard. I've seen it happen and have been on the receiving end of it a couple times. I feel like everyone needs that one thing to take their mind off of life, and sports does that to a lot of people.

I agree that it brings guys together, but how much bonding are they really having? Their emotional toll is a reflection of how invested they are in their favorite teams.
Golf is fantastic, it's an outdoor activity that allows one man to compete with another. Video games has the same concept of competition, but it isn't exactly value added.
I love video games, I love bringing all my friends together to play video games, but ultimately, I realize it's a form of entertainment that isn't meant to be indulged upon. Physical activities like sports and whatnot... it's better to indulge upon because it actually contributes to your health.

Spectator sports aren't a "men-only" thing. The most obsessive sports fans I've ever seen after living all over North America have been female Texas Rangers and Dallas Cowboys fans. The most sports-obsessed man I know is a complete beta too. He sold his car to go halfway across the country to shack-up with a single mom who rejected him previously for an abuser. Before that, I caught him going to pick up a girl he was in to to drive her to another dude's house. As I read in the comments on the original: "There is nothing more beta than memorizing the stats and achievements of another man."
I don't think he's trying to stigmatize spectator sports. In fact, he clearly said it was okay to watch occasionally. I think he's trying to warn everyone about the beta aspects of it: herd mentality, passivity, complacency, etc.

Learning the stats of football players is not much different than memorizing Magic: The Gathering cards. Very different social groups yes, but the idea is the same. Both are useless hobbies which only have benefit as being fun socialization venues. Anything that brings men together to socialize is a good thing. However watching sports on TV by yourself (alone) all the time is no less pathetic than playing Magic cards by yourself.
The activity being done isn't nearly as important as avoiding isolation.

I disagree. You have to have some fun in life. You don't always need to be doing something. Sure, you could be gaming chicks, reading, doing anything self improvement wise. I get it. However, sports are fun. I played them as a kid. I enjoy college football, baseball and hockey. I Don't give a damn who likes them or not. The author is lucky he didn't get his face beat in for being a dick for no reason.
No matter what happens in life, you are going to be weak in some areas. Some men are just going to be alpha, beta, omega, whatever. IF they are enjoying the playoffs, let them. I do agree about not letting it control your emotional well being, but if you like a team, and they lose, you can have a beer and be bummed for a lil bit, Then you move on to something else. Being part of a group is important.
There are way worse things in the world than watching the NHL Playoffs. In fact, hockey is one sport not polluted with pink and catering to women and all of that nonsense.

I agree to an extent. Personally I prefer fiction as a means of distraction. It's so much less superficial than "how 'bout them Cowboys" is. Sports movies interest me more than team spectator sports - there's a story to be told.

There are stories to be told in real sports, and often times they are much more amazing than in movies.
For instance, can Lebron forge his legacy with a 3rd championship in as many years? Will the pacers (their bogey team) be able to stop them in a much anticipated conference finals? Will a real team filled with aging past their prime veterans (spurs) be able to beat superior talent and youth?
These are exciting storylines unfolding before our eyes at the moment.
Im from new zealand, and our country is rugby mad (and the undisputed best nation at it ever). When the world cup rolls around, our nation is by and large transfixed. We are expected to win, we place huge pressure on the players to win, there are parties in the streets if we win.
Sports can be great, just keep it in moderation.

You're missing the point. The stories don't require real-time viewing. You can just hear about it on TV afterwards without it eating two or three hours of your time. The idea of Lebron James coming up short appeals to me because he's an asshole, but the events of the game don't.
I remember having this realization when I was 16 and watching the Houston Astros advance to the WS after 18 innings. I had been bored out of my mind for the majority of the time I spent watching the game and the euphoria came all at once at the very end. I would have had the same reaction secondhand. It wasn't the game, it was the idea of winning.

Watching game 6 of the rockets/trailblazers this year was amazing. Watching damian lillard hit a ICE COLD game winning 3 with 0.7 seconds left on the clock to WIN THE SERIES, while the home crowd goes from quiet -> exstatic, was a thing of beauty.
Sure, i can tell my friends about it afterwards, and they're like "haha, cool!". But if you watched the whole game it was beautiful. I'd jumped out of my seat at the end. Seeing the events unfold before your eyes is much preferrable to watching a highlight after, imo.
I agree with the sentiment you should be a doer rather than an observer, but if part of your relaxing time is watching a sport you like, so be it. If you don't like watching it then don't. It is objectively no different to watching a movie in terms of entertainment

I'll be interested to see if the level of butthurt here reaches what I saw when I suggested that it might be a good idea to step away from the TV.
Living vicariously is the problem, and there are a whole-fucking-lot of people (here and everywhere) that don't want to give up that particularly bad habit. Mostly because it's a quick, easy high to associate yourself with your betters (ie, the players) than it is to become better.
Get out there use the time you have to be the best you can be. Everything else is a waste of time.

Without question, the people I know who don't pay attention to sports generally are the most annoying and nerdiest people I know. They generally think they are above sports and think they are far too cool for them to the point where they are insufferable to talk to.
Having played football, soccer, baseball, and basketball as a kid growing up, I can easily say that most former jocks watch sports. Why? Because they like watching incredible feats of athleticism and can appreciate the hard work that goes into becoming that good and don't really feel intimidated by them. Not surprising that this view would be espoused on a nerdy website like Reddit though. Go to any college football message board to see the difference in mentality from this place. This thread honestly reeks of pure envy from the guys the jocks used to bully.

I played baseball in high school and earned a brown belt in jujutsu. I've just never enjoyed watching other people play team sports. I like watching fights because the feats are more concentrated and discussion is more technical and less like a religion.

Seriously? You do realize there are 55 players on an NFL team and then another 7 practice squad guys right? There are 12 players on an NBA team and like 20 on an MLB team, if you're surprised that players in those leagues make more money then I think you should probably go and take economics again. Football is by far and away the most popular sport here, the NFL blows away everything else and college football comes in 2nd by a significant margin.
Go look at the stats from an NFL combine and then tell me these aren't the best athletes. When you have men who are 6'6", 300+ and running 4.8 or better 40s while benching 225 lbs 30+ times, you can't possibly think anything else, and that's just the OL. Then you have the WRs and RBs and DEs and LBs, who are also ridiculous.

MLB teams have 40-man rosters and the NFL still pales. The NBA has about 15 to a team, but the roster is dominated by people making less than $4 million while one to three top guys make tens of millions. The Highest paid NFL player makes $17.5 million while the other two sports have about one guy per team making more than that.
If it brought in so much more money, then the gap would close, but it doesn't "blow it out of the water" at all. NFL brings in $9.5 billion and is second to MLB's 7.5 billion. NCAA football isn't even in the same ballpark. The NCAA makes 5.3 when you include all Division I sports, so a significant portion of that is lost to basketball and hockey.

College football has how many championship games going on again? Apples and oranges...or more like a dozen oranges and one apple.
The World Series is split up over up to seven games, the ratings will naturally be lower. Not only is the Superbowl an all-or-nothing game on presumably neutral ground, it is guaranteed to be on a Sunday. As for the draft, again...a single event.

Once more, look at those days and times. There are no NFL games during work/school hours on a weekday. That's what happens when you only play one day a week.

The discussion was never about popularity, that was just a red herring you brought in like it had something to do with anything. Ping pong is the most popular sport in China, so would you like to make the case that they're the top athletes? Pay has everything to do with it. That is a clear indicator of value. We already covered how the NFL doesn't have that many more players than MLB and their gap in pay is not proportional to the difference in revenue.
This is what I get for arguing with a damn sperglord. Christ man look at the damn NFL combine results and then get back to me. NFL players are highly specialized and vary wildly. You have guys like Adrian Peterson at RB who can run 4.3 40s at 6'1", 217 lbs and can run over people. You have Offensive tackles who are 6'7", 320 lbs, have 10 yard splits faster than RBs, and can bench press 500+ and squat a truck. Then you have the DEs like Jadeveon Clowney who are 6'5", 270 lbs, and can run the 40 in 4.5. Then there are the huge TEs and WRs who are 6'5"+ with 40 inch vertical leaps and can run the 40 in 4.4.
There are very few baseball players that can matchup to most NFL players from an athletic standpoint. Does this mean that baseball is easy? No, you would have to be an idiot to say that when the most successful hitters only succeed 30% of the time. However, baseball is much more like golf than anything because fat guys who can't move much can still play if they are good pitchers or hitters. Fat guys who can't move wash out of the NFL fast (fat guys like Vince Wilfork who can move are very very rare, Wilfork is a genetic freak in this regard).
The NBA has some fantastic athletes like Lebron and Dwight Howard, but not to the extent of the NFL. The NBA is definitely 2nd best though.
Growing up, virtually all of the best athletes I knew gravitated towards football. I know this to be true almost everywhere in Texas and the rest of the South.

It takes a special kind of men to hump a 150 lb 7 day sustainment load 25 miles in a single day. The average person, especially in today's society is intellectually incapable of coordinating a close air support strike on a machine gun position situated on top of a hill 900 meters away from you while you and your squad are stuck taking suppressive fire in a wadi below.
Which may be a bit extreme, and I support anyone refusing to fight for the America we know now so let's just substitute this for combat sports.
If you guys don't think combat sports take strategy and mental acuity you've never been in a fight against another trained combatant. It's a test of might and spirit, a culmination of your physical and mental forging and tempering.

A sea of pink breast cancer support propaganda - because all other forms of cancer are invalid right? Endless advertisements and endorsements. I never compared sports to combat what the hell ಠ_ಠ? War and combat are far more grueling and masculine than any sport, I completely agree with you there. I also agree that there is far more strategy in that than anything else.
Combat sports though? No, they don't compare to football at all. I don't care much for the NFL, I'm a college football guy. Will I watch the NFL? Sure because I enjoy watching football, but I watch it out of a love of the game not because I have a favorite team. I couldn't care less about the advertisements and other other bullshit.

Ehhh. I agree playing sports is obviously a lot more alpha than watching them. But I think doing both playing AND watching them is pretty alpha. I think the encouragement of male children to do other stuff than be into watching sports is a lot of the reason so many betas exist.
