For those of you raised without a dad, I wanted to share a few things I have learnt.

Firstly, your mum is not someone you should be taking advice from. You may already intuitively know this, but it's a good rule to stick by especially after you've turned 18. It may appear she has your best interests at heart but she doesn't have the knowledge to help you become the best version of yourself as a man. Quite simply because she is not a man.

Secondly, your friends most likely aren't going to be able to give you any advice. Especially those raised by two parents. If you find a friend who has a healthy relationship with their Dad (they respect their Dad), get as much life advice from this friend as possible. The better alternative, is to find a male mentor who is much, much older than you. Maybe a football coach, teacher or employer. Don't be too shy. If they know your circumstances and have good values, they'll want to help you out. Another option may be to start bjj. I don't personally do this, but there seem to me a lot of positive male role models amidst that sport.

Thirdly, if you have some unresolved childhood scars (which you most likely do, they may not have come out yet), go see a psychologist/therapist as soon as possible. You will benefit so much from talking to someone. Also this will help heal any childhood trauma. There is no shame in it. I have benefitted enormously from talking to someone. And even if I didn't have any issues I would see one just to assist in getting out of negative thought patterns.

Fourthly, don't bother with your dad. It's a waste of your time. You can achieve so much more on your own. And anyone who has left you behind to get on with their life is not worth the time.

That's all for now. Best of luck. I know it's not easy but there's nothing that you can't learn about being a man on your own.
