I did strong lift 5x5 to get started. iifym.com will help with macro balance. I recommend 4 sets of 25 pushups, dips, sit ups on non gym days. I am a fan of keep it simple stupid. Take photos every week and post your results in 6 weeks.

Also, you get over gym anxiety by having a plan and knowing exactly what you're going to do ahead of time. You'll see that you're more focused than the majority of people there. You're on a path better than they are and you've only just begun. I wouldn't necessarily trust a gym-going friend, they have to really know their shit.
Starting Strength to start, there's great information on form in there, the MyFitnessPal app also is very useful for calorie tracking and calculations.

I'm not trying to be super jacked, I just want to be more toned, and lose the fucking love handles
so in your case, since you're super skinny, you need to focus on building muscle. the only reason that you think you look "fat" is because you have no muscle mass. once you do then the fat won't really be noticable. do this -
download the free "stronglifts" ebook and follow that program (~45min of lifting 3x per week. you can handle it i promise)
google a TDEE calculator and calculate how many calories you burn per day (while exercising 3x per week). add 500 and eat that amount
make sure to eat ~165g of protein per day. get some whey powder off amazon.
that's really all you need to do to get a great start. and you're just gonna have to get over the gym anxiety... i know it's intimidating, but no one's even gonna notice you. if i see a newb, i don't think "lol look at that pussy!", i think "awesome - good for him. i hope he keeps at it".
funny side note - i was recently hanging out with 2 friends - one of whom wants to start lifting and i'm actually going with him this weekend to get him started. he mentioned to our other friend that he has some "gym anxiety". our other friend did a few years in max security state prison and he's like "gym anxiety?!?! try walking out in the yard on your first day in PRISON to try to lift weights!!!" haha.

Solid advice here.
To the OP: Someone who is 6' should ideally be 165-195 lbs. The only way to get here is proper nutrition.
You diet should consist of fresh meat, salads, eggs and a small amount of fresh fruit and dairy. If you are 145 lbs, it is almost certain that you aren't eating enough quality food. Even though I disagree with the concept of the paleo diet, most of the paleo recipes and nutritional balances are a good place to start. The big thing I disagree with on paleo is their stance on dairy and the seemingly arbitrary inclusion/exclusion of certain foods/groups. This is why you see a lot of talk about "80% Paleo".
Since you are trying to bulk up, you can add creatine to your diet to help with bulking up, but this is a personal preference of where you are on the "natural" scale of building.

Keto is really the ideal recommendation for him then.
Also, I don't understand why people come to TRP for nutritional/lifting advice... go to the proper subs!

I'm 1000% team creatine as I don't think its any more unnatural than whey protein. I just didn't wanna bombard him with too much info to the point where he's like fuck it, this is too complicated

Makes sense, though I find newbs to lifting are hesitant to start creatine early. I know I was.

A. You won't get 'super jacked' over night. It takes years of work and retarded amounts of dedication to look like anything close to a physique athlete and even then most need to jump on the tech to get there.
B. 90% of people at your average gym also have no idea what they're doing. Maybe 10% of gym goers are pushing themselves and actually doing some training. It really depends on the gym you sign up at though but this shouldn't be an issue. If you surround yourself with idiots you'll only get dumber. You should surround yourself with people better than you.

Rule #1: do not let 24 hours go by without doing something for your fitness, no matter how small.
It's bedtime, and you haven't worked out today? Do a set of pushups before you go to bed, or pull ups, or squats. Do something, even if it's small. 95% of your battle right now is getting the good habits established

Simplicity plan: Eat a lot of food, do compound exercises such as the dead squat bench and press, sleep enough. Holla.
