Individuals travel alone to explore the world.

Couples travel together to explore each other.

Groups travel together so they don't have to explore anything.

So it's an easy question, do you want to have a cute time with a girl, do the same old thing you always do with your group or go and create new experiences, push boundaries and live to the fullest.

[–]nodiggity9721 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Just the thought of group-travel makes me shiver.

[–]DrScientist8123 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Knew a girl who hated all the drama and partying of group travel but loved the fucking. Oh well

[–]Zebleblic2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My friends and I have pretty much every interest in common. I like to travel in a group of three so I can peace out when and if I want and not have to worry about someone else being alone.

When I've traveled with just one other, I've never had a problem we like to do the same stuff and never have argued when one of us offers up an idea.

I travel alone at times, but I always have more fun with one of my good friends than alone. You have someone to experience it with and talk to about it.

On that not I hate traveling with a girl. It's usually boring and dragging her around with her whining. It doesn't matter what you do, they complain about shit all the time.

Unless it's for grandparents, so they have someone to look after them when they inevitably fuck up.

[–]nodiggity9721 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I don't think TRP is for grandparents.

[–]Senior Endorsed ContributorVasiliyZaitzev4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Right, but guided tours in foreign countries are.

[–]randomuserwot1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Travelling allows oneself to break free off patterns that were reinforced over years. I am glad I realized some key components of TRP without TRP knowledge. I started lifting when I was 17 and kept on doing it and I started travelling when I was 18 (on my own). What the OP is missing in his post is that a short duration will not be an adequate experience. This will only allow for a superficial immersion in a foreign environment. If you're serious about travelling on your own, you should at least be ready to invest several months of your time into the endeavour.

Don't know about the majority, maybe its because I'm extremely introverted (I mention that as one of the qualities I cherish most, not a flaw), the thought of traveling with somebody that will consequently cling on to me for the majority of time, be in the same room as I, and do all of the activities with me makes me cringe.

As an online business owner I travel around the world (mostly my beloved Europe) on semi - constant basis, while working on my laptop and there is nothing I love and enjoy more than being able to try whatever the hell I want, go wherever I want, socialize with who I want, fuck anyone I want, while being able to leave an instant I find it doesn't fit my requirements. It is the kind of Freedom that I feel makes life worth living.

Bringing someone I have a relationship with (long time friends, family, or God forbid, a LTR) would feel to me like chaining a massive weight to my leg and having to drag it throughout my journey while it keeps exhausting and slowing me down.

"Never avoid seeing the world just because you have no one to join you." ~ I would agree and also add: always refuse anyone trying to join you.

Traveling alone will force you to build a powerful connection of trust and confidence with yourself, while also giving you the freedom to do what you think would be most fun/best without having to compromise and think about what your travel partner would like to do. It will also force you to socialize more and get a better feel of the local culture and people, and make you more accessible to them considering that there is always an aura of mystery and attractive courage a "lonely traveler" seems to radiate, at least in my experience.

What parts of Europe do you recommend?? I pretty much only speak English

[–]SexyDeviI4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Malta in summer for pleasent, laid back, chill experience in a country with beautiful beaches, amazing centuries old culture and architecture, history, and quite solid parties if you decide to go wild.

Provence and Tuscany in spring for enjoying in my opinion one of the most beautiful sights of non extravagant yet absolutely amazing nature and peaceful way of life.

Vienna in winter because the city looks amazing decorated in Christmas and the Vienesse are one of the most civilized, polite, well mannered people I've encountered in my life (immigrants excluded). Hell - you can even go to one of the Medieval Balls for a decent price. If you're drunk or high, it's one of the best experiences ever LOL. At least was for me. Just don't take anything that makes you go crazy, they'll kick you out. You need to watch your manners at a ball.

Anywhere (I mostly recommend Switzerland) in the Alpine mountains in the winter if you feel like skying and love to do it. The most amazing tracks in the Europe, for everyone from beginners to pro's.

And finally, Russia - Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Russia is one of the Europe's most beautiful countries and if you can get in there with an open mind while neglecting the propaganda we were fed you'll certainly have a blast. Welcoming people, hot girls, lots of Vodka, crazy parties. Not to mention that Winter Palace make most of the Europe's museums look like a kindergarten.

Any experience with Germany or England?

[–]barryberry1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Germany is fun. Both Berlin and Munchen are awesome. Not much a fan of England, depending where you go it can be nice. But London is expensive and not that great.

Some eastern european countries are amazing, especially budget wise. I really like Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and Hungary. Spain and Italy are fine as well if you want to go mediterranean.

Tip: avoid France, and especially Paris.

[–]randomuserwot1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Don't agree with the last part. The provence is a really beautiful place. Apart from that though I do agree that France doesn't offer that much.

Don't know about the majority, maybe its because I'm extremely introverted

I am massively EXTROVERTED and I don't want to be dragging an anchor, either. I am happy to meet people along the way...I'm an extrovert... everyone is approachable.

When I go back to the old country, there are a lot of guys who want to ride shotgun, but unless they are "known guys" who can handle themselves while I am off in the one-back offense, they don't come with me. More people, more problems. I don't need to babysit anyone b/c they don't speak the local language--half the time, I don't either--or do any shit I don't want to do.

I have been chilling in Europe most of this week. Had a lovely, local HB8 drop by for company. She's 19 and everything on her body is perfect...had some vino and fed her a light dinner, then she took care of my physical needs. Four hours later, she was gone. Wouldn't even take taxi fare. It was the GFE with none of the GFE problems (i.e. the monetary outlay, or the problems of an actual GF).

Life is so much better unplugged....

[–]nodiggity9721 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I completely agree with what you said. I aim one day to find a job that requires you to travel the world, beautiful Europe specifically. I could also be regarded introverted, but it's not something you can see on me, you know? It's just that I enjoy being in the company of myself.

Could you share a little more about what you do for work?

[–]Brewjo4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Small world, just about to burn my life and hit the road for a year or so of adventure me being active.

I'll be camping and seeing my country for the first time, earning money in strange ways and places. Just need my tax return to cover some insurance, car service and fuel.

Me vs 15000km.

[–]FriendlyJack1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Keep a blog. I want to know how it turns out.

[–]drawden633 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

I did a month around Scandinavia by my self when I was 18. Everyone looked at me as though I was batshit insane. when I said i was gong by myself. but even at that young age I couldnt be bothered with reaching a group consensus on every decision. If i wanted to go somewhere I went there. Thing is when you get where ever there are loads of people in the same boat so you make friends pretty easy. It also show you how small the world is. Im a Brit in Australia and in the town im in now Ive met 3 people from my tiny shithole town back home.

[–]Derbi50 -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I thought the British hated the Australians? Like don't the British view the Australians the same way Americans view southern trailer park folk?

[–]drawden637 points8 points9 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Nah we love the sundrenched convict bastards. They act like they don't like us cos we're all whinging bloody poms but when it all boils down to it were bound by our shared monarch, appriciation of beer and a history of cruel oppression of indigenous peoples.

[–]taw1272 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Can confirm.

I traveled to London for work about a year ago. Ended up booking my stay for an extra couple of days.

I really helped me realize who I am on my own. And I liked it better than the person I am with friends. I was more free to meander about, do what I want, change my mind in a split second.

I went to a bunch of tourist spots. Everywhere I went, I immediately made friends with the groups there. I rotated from group to group, talking and laughing and teasing. It was all extremely well received.

The coup de grace was my last night - at some random bar near the tube. I had only gone it to kill time before heading to a comedy show. While in there, I noticed a ping-pong table and decided to challenge this group of girls sitting by it to a match. There I was, all alone, no friends, no wingman, simultaneously teaching 3 HB9's how to play a new game. After a couple of rounds, I moved on. I started chatting up this really cute bartender and we thumb-wrestled over the counter until her manager pulled her away to scold her for spending too much time with me. I simply turned around and started talking to the man next to me. His wife was in the bathroom. By the time she came out we were talking like old pals. He joked about not being able to dance and had me dance with his wife. She was a solid HB8 and we got fairly graphic on the floor while he sat there smiling at us.

I played more ping pong, I danced with more women, I befriended all the bouncers. I had a fucking ball. One of the HB9's tried to close me (she asked where I was staying and - when I told her - grabbed my thigh and said "well, that's a lot closer than my place"). At the time I was in an LTR and didn't want to cheat.

But yes. Travel alone. Go out alone. Learn to be alone. I'm not very RP (maybe not even slightly RP), but being in uncharted territory by myself has always brought out the best in me.

Give it a shot.

[–]nodiggity9721 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Completely true. Friends, BP or RP both tend to act as limiters. Whether you like it or not certain factors will always stop you from doing something. Specific actions might put a friendship or a job on the line and you'll avoid most spontaneous things on a day to day basis (unless your fucking awesome). What I'm trying to say is, that lone travel correlates with the quote; "Imagine what you could do if you didn't care what anyone thought". Nothing will "come around" to get you and you can't truly regret doing anything as you leave your actions a flight's distance away and that's why when you travel alone you realize your true self.

[–]fatkawk2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I took a 6 month vacation, visiting 4 different countries last year. I worked on my laptop and lived out of a backpack.

It was one of the best experiences of my life.

[–]Derbi50 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

It really depends on where you are traveling. I have been to some grimy places and I can say that having a companion can be crucial. For instance I got arrested in Jamaica one time and would have been fucked if my traveling companion handnt known where my money/documents were and bribed me up out of that shut hole. If you think American jails are bad try a third world jail.

Places like Western Europe or North America sure knock yourself out, travel alone if no one worthy can/will come. It's really easy to make Internet friends with someone local before you go. Offer to bring them something from America in exchange for showing you around.

Also I did airbnb for my trip to the Northern Europe. If you can find a household that seems to have a youngish person in it there is your ticket to good times. Otherwise in a pinch your host can bail you out of trouble as long as it's not something horrible you shouldn't be doing anyway.

[–]FriendlyJack0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

What got you arrested? Just curious.

[–]Derbi50 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Police saw my drunk ass and knew they had like a 90% chance of finding something illegal when they shook me down. Of course they did find something illegal.

If they wanted to be real dicks I could have been in serious trubs but they just wanted a bribe, which my companion provided.

$50 US got me out of what would have been a felling here.

[–]ForgeAndTemper 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I mean, what are we talking here if you were alone? I'm optimistically assuming you wouldn't be rotting there now?

[–]Derbi50 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Also fun fact the police station next to the jail had a bar in it. Ever heard of "Red Stripe" beer? It's named after the policemen who have a red stripe down each leg of their uniforms.

[–]FriendlyJack0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

That's some funny shit. Some Jamaican themed party at a bar in town was sponsored by Red Stripe beer.

[–]Drogba0062 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

When I think know traveling alone the first thing that comes to my mind is the exodus of Bruce Wayne on his physical and spiritual journey towards building the legend of Batman

[–]Fastbac0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Took each of my kids to Europe on individual trips when they were teens. Just me and one of them for a week. It was the highlight of their teen years. To see the Rosetta Stone or Pompeii or the Mona Lisa or Stonehenge put them way ahead of other kids. Sometimes they'd get units in school on some topic and they could talk first-hand about it.

One of them just graduated from college and spent 9 weeks in Australia and New Zealand. Just the kid, a ticket and a backpack. I suggested a few things to see but she did everything else herself.

Now I'm taking one of them again in September and we are in the planning stages. It's not like taking a girlfriend but super easy because we have the same style of travel (power sightseeing - how much can you do in 96 hours in a city!) and they'll pretty much defer to me on what to see. I'll read about the things that I particularly want to see then book a place in the center of those things. I tend towards the old parts of cities. In Rome it was Trastevere; in Prague, Old Town; in Paris, near Notre Dame. Berlin, I stayed in the East German side.

This will be my first trip for two weeks, so we'll cover four cities rather than two. I find three full days in a place is enough to get familiar with it and can then go back on another trip if I missed some things.

[–]FriendlyJack0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Traveling alone is definitely a great way to build strong social skills and meet new people. It's an experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives. First time I did it made me feel alive and empowered unlike anything else.

That said, traveling with good friends or a lover allows you to share experiences, which is also extremely valuable. Me and my friend still talk about the epic road trip through Florida that we did 5 years ago where we got chased out of town by a bunch of angry rednecks because I (unknowingly) made out with one of their girlfriends. Me and my lover still talk about the amazing things we've seen and the unforgettable moments we've had in New Zealand.

Those experiences wouldn't be as memorable and awesome, if I went through them on my own.

Conclusion: do both.

It's a good thing to highlight the idea of solo travel, though, as most people won't even consider it.

[–]mygodimpathetic0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

See I've traveled to Brazil (World Cup), Colombia, NYC and Hawaii completely by myself all in the last year. But I still can't seem to bring myself to like going alone to local bar or club... idk why. I've done it before, though... went to a really nice club, danced a bit, but I kinda didn't enjoy it as much as I should have. I guess there's days when the fish just don't bite, but it kinda put me off the whole idea of going out by myself, cuz at least some fun is guaranteed when your friends come along.

However... going by myself to a club when I'm abroad alone -- no problem. I kinda pretty much always meet/talk to people and it ends up being a fun night out. I seem to have a gift for attracting cool foreign chicks. But at home, fuck no, it just seems SO boring to me. Maybe I don't like my town... idk I guess I'm more of a house party kinda guy.

But yes. Traveling alone is awesome. You can see what you like, who you like, when you like. And besides expanding your horizons, trying out new things, and meeting new people, you learn A LOT about yourself in the process.

I highly recommand the Camino de Santiago. Spain, tons of culture, good food, lots of wine and plenty of people from all nationalities and ages.

Woke up, bought a back pack and a train ticket and that evening I was sleeping directly below the Pyrenees. Met lots of interesting people, could've gotten woth a German-Ukranian girl from Köln, got with a German girl from Berlin.

[–]the99percent1-1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I travel alone to do activities I love. Scuba diving, Kite surfing, car cruises.

That way, even though im alone, im not lonely as I meet people with similar interests and hobbies.

Nothing spells 'loser' than seeing the Colosseum alone. Save that experience for your girlfriend.

As a single guy, travel to do some crazy fucked up shit with random people.
