I can answer this question-the base question of "why do women only hours exist".

Money.

$20 says these gyms do not give a shit about feminism or what women want. They care about money. Women only hours would appeal to the women, get them into the gym, get more people to sign up for the gym because "the company cares about me!"

The company does not care about you. The company cares about your money. I like money. You like money. And if money can be made, money WILL be made. MONEY!

I'm at the gym every day. I have never seen a woman ogled or harassed.

The real reason for women's only gyms is that fat women want to feel okay working out, away from the potential judgment of the men they claim not to need.

Again, as a person who works out pretty much daily, I don't give a fuck about anybody else's appearance at the gym. I am only there to pick up heavy shit and put it back down. That's it.

If there's an especially attractive woman at the gym, I notice her less than I would at any other time. My mind is on what I'm doing.

If there's a really fat person (male or female), my only thought is "oh okay, that's great! Glad to see them doing something for themselves."

Really. I don't even look over at the women, who are usually on the cardio machines. If I notice a woman coming into the free weight area, it's only because they don't often do so, and so it's mildly remarkable when it happens.

I saw this thread and knew it was bait, but I had to reply (I posted before I saw this thread was posted). It always bothers me the condescending tone used by feminists in this kind of situation. Their line of reasoning more or less is "women can't handle it because they don't have the mental strength men do so we need to protect them".

That kind of callous remark on behalf of people who are (presumably) in defense of women... it boggles the mind. I'm not cynical enough yet to dismiss women in that way.

Well actually I don't see anything wrong with women-only hours as long as there are also men-only hours. In my country, genders are separated in gyms and everybody's fine with it.

This is a case of women's entitlement to protection. Women have no expectation or right to be free from being looked at or talked to.

On the rare occasion when something serious does happen (like at normal gym time), these places are still equipped to deal with it. If they weren't, no one would work out there.

As "sexist" as the Middle East is to every feminist that doesn't care enough to actually do something about it, women have a lot of entitlements (due to religion, but even the non-Muslim women piggy-back off the perks while avoiding the drawbacks). Women-only gym hours in most co-ed gyms (and it's not a few hours a day, it's usually the best 5-6 hours every day). Men can get their haircut at my salon only one day a week while women any other day. Women have unbelievable perks in clubs, etc due to the sausage-fest ratio, but that's a given. Women enjoy easier requirements to get a driver's license (can take the test in automatic without having to beg the system and if they pout enough they can retry due to beta white knight cops). Women can play the "but I'm a woman" card and get discounts on all kinds of shit. I saw my g/f do this very thing when negotiating a car which was amazing. "You can give that price to a man, but I'm a woman and I need that money for other things blah blah blah" kind of shit that would get her laughed out of any deal in the states.

Nobody says shit to anyone they don't already know at my gym. When I'm resting on the stairs to the loft I can see girls from the second they walk in to when they get on their bullshit little treadmills to when they leave (not the same girl from start to finish though). Nobody bothers ever them, nobody. Nobody talks to them. Nobody stops them. Nobody does shit except maybe look at their ass.

It's not the women-only hours that bug me (although that does reek of female privilege). It's the fact that men have to subsidize it via same fees even though women are getting more for their money. Make women pay more, opt into it with an additional fee, etc then I'd be okay with it.

That grrl-club space could have been devoted to more weights, instead it's duplicated for the fat chicks that think guys are oogling them.

My last gym was in a U shape.

You got to the top of the stairs and entered reception. Reception led to the sun beds and changing rooms. You then went left for the Womens side and right for the Mens side.

It worked like a dream because both genders got their own space

I've officially started drinking the Kool aid and joined a crossfit gym. For an hour during the gym's schedule, women only are allowed at the gym. Well, women and their kids.

I asked the owner why this is happening and if I could use the Olympic weightlifting room to work on form. Picture the front and back of the house of a restaurant, with the Olympic room separated by a set of double doors. He said that the women would be uncomfortable with it, because it is "too intimidating" to have a man in there, despite the division between the rooms.

A girl I know works out with the "hotties" class (they're anything but, in fact they're moody and judgmental) and she mentioned that the women don't like a normal class because there's too much testosterone and the guys and girls that go to normal classes were intimidating.

It's incredulous that people can't socialize because they have kids or a guys works out with his shirt off (common in crossfit). We then choose to segregate and not allow men during a workout because someone feels they are intimidated. Have those women ever actually tried communicating with us? Absolutely not, they get preferential treatment and we get restrictions.

Their next step was to say its because their kids are there and it's dangerous to have people throwing around weights. So, either they aren't choosing to attempt to do the workouts as prescribed and improve or see results, or they use their offspring as a scapegoat.

I've since canceled my membership.

What are women prohibited from doing during gym hours that men are allowed to do? They're allowed to use every single machine and weight that men use. Hell, they could probably even use the men's bathroom/locker room and nobody would care.

"Women's only" gym time is absolute shit. This just adds to how I am impressed when I see a fairly fit/muscular girl at the gym doing some real exercises and not using the elliptical or doing 3x60 curls with 5 lb. dumbbells. It's all the more impressive considering most girls I see are all "oh men are so mean at the gym, they just judge me and blah blah, time for the elliptical."

Also, there are already girls-only gyms that exist, so why the hell do they need separate hours?

I don't see the problem. I go to a male only gym so we don't get harassed by women. There are male only gyms in every large city.
