According this study women find promiscuity as a highly undesirable trait in potential partners, even for short term relationships. On a scale of -3 being extremely undesirable and +3 being extremely desirable, women ranked promiscuity at -1.28 in short term mates and -2.15 in long term mates. Compare this to men who ranked it at .36 in short term mates and -.99 in long term mates.

I'm not sure the numbers are to be trusted. They said nothing about 3 or 4. It's like King Arthur counting 1, 2, 5. Also, if they did it with pictures, if you have 5 exes around you it looks more like a harem.

So they show pictures of men with 1, 2, and 5 women. Then they have a description saying how many relationships he has been in, and whether he is currently in one?
I'd be interested in knowing what happened with different combinations, for example:
5 women in the picture, but he is described as never having an ltr.
1 woman in picture, but described as having many relationships or taken.
Seems like there are a lot of different factors going into this. I'm really surprised that the men with 5 or more previous relationships were considered unnatractive because that really isn't very many. You could easily have a guy with maybe 2 or 3 serious relationships in high school and college, plus one more after and according to this he'd be nearing the "manwhore" zone.

There are a few other issues with the study from just reading that abstract:
How many different male subjects were there?
How were the photos arranged?
What was the wording of the questions? This is important.
Who was asking the questions? There were two researchers listed and it seems that one is female and the other is male.
What point in the woman's cycle were these questions asked? It has been shown that women have different preferences for men based on when in their cycle they were.
How many of them were on birth control? This is related to the previous point.
I'm glad that this study went through as it gives more evidence for us being correct; they even used a similar acronym (Self Perceived Mate Value = SPMV).

Anyway, preselection is evolutionarily rational for women to use as a mental shortcut. Indepedent evaluation of every male's value would be prohibitively costly and unreasonable. Preselection allows the use of other women's mental resources for mate evaluation and probably has a high fraction of true positive high value identifications compared to false negatives and false positives.

Yes, like I said, they need other women because they don't have penises to pick mates for them. I couldn't care less what other men think about a woman cause I have a penis to tell me whether I'm attracted to a woman or not (it either gets hard or it doesn't). Women don't have penises, so they depend on the opinions of other females.

I don't really see why this was downvoted, as most people here agree that "women like men that other women like".
And I'd agree with you're second point as well; women had no reason to develop a strong sex drive the way men did. Males use an energy sparse reproductive strategy, and females use an energy rich one; this is the fundamental defining factor of sexual reproduction.
Supply and demand applies to evolution as well as economics, and as a result, males end up wanting females on a more fundamentally biologically meaningful way, while females operate on a combination of social assessment and other vestigial stuff, which can include some form, but certainly not the same extent, of the innate attraction that males experience.
So yes, women like men that other women like because they don't have penises (or rather the appropriate combination of genes and hormones at the right point in their development) to tell them who they find attractive.
Maybe a better way of putting it is that women like men that other women like because it was never advantageous for women to develop an innate attraction to men, and as such, their attraction is based on more conscious mechanisms, and is thus more prone to change.

I think this has some truth. As a women who prefers to be a little more passive, I want a partner who is more experienced than myself (or confident enough to take the reins) But I don't want them to be so experienced that I'm going to get an STI.

I guess I'm more aggressive. I love being with virgins and teaching them everything. The only longy problem is that they turn into stalkers. I kinda really don't care. You can get an STI from anyone. It's a risk your taking anyways. I've been with someone who has been with 25 partners. Best sex I've ever had. I've been with someone who has 3 and it was the worst sex. So for me, I'd prefer virgins or someone with lots of experience. I'm very adventurous.
